These 3 arrived today! Not my usual style of knife but I've been intrigued with them for awhile, so I finally pulled the trigger!

A made in France 6 1/4" oal Roger Orfevre Le Thiers 289 slip-joint with Paper Stone handles!

A made in Portugal 9.6" oal Curel Estiletto Portuguese slip-joint with Stamina wood handles!

A made in Japan 5 1/8" oal Kiridashi pull-apart slicer in full brass!

Thanks Garry. The Le Theirs from France is an extremely well built knife that I've admired for awhile now, and the slim Portuguese folder is another I've wanted to examine for some time, but the Japanese Kiridashi is the closest thing to a useless knife I've come across so far, but I had to satisfy my curiosity so I wasted my money on it. I suppose for some precision cutting it might be useful, but not much beyond that.

Although a general utility knife, a kiridashi is mostly used for "bamboo crafting and woodworking." Perhaps it could be used for an emergency tracheotomy.

Here is a Russian knife I got in the mail today.
It's a Kizlyar Supreme they call a "Gent" black titanium blade and white bone handle.
At first inspection it is a very well made knife. Very sharp right out of the box.

It's a Kizlyar Supreme they call a "Gent" black titanium blade and white bone handle.
At first inspection it is a very well made knife. Very sharp right out of the box.

David R, Liking your new Kizlar. I think Kizlar has only been around a few years, but has made a good name for itself. I bought the first one I saw advertised. In fact, you inspired me to use it today.I have had it for about 7 years I think and it still has solid half stops and plenty of walk and talk.

That's a big solid looking workhorse you have there Garry. I'll bet it looks and functions just as good as when you first got it. I've been aware of Kizlyar knives for a couple of years and I believe I even own one. The thing about most Russian built knives is that they're all big and over-built, at least the models I own are. Yours also seems to fall into that category. Very nice!

Thanks for your observations Marco. I've got to admit that this morning I discovered a slim crack running from the center pin up to the top of the bone. I'll have to research what is the best treatment to prevent further development.

I'm sorry to hear that Garry. I'm assuming that the bone is cracking or shrinking due to dryness and not because you dropped the knife, and I know that all the treatments to prevent further shrinking of stag or bone involve lanolin, and a 7 oz. tub of it can be purchased from Amazon for $21.50 and it's pharmaceutical food grade, although ANY cream or lotion with lanolin in it will work, I just thought the purer the better when I needed it. You simply slather it on and let it soak for at least 24 hrs., wipe it clean, and the bone should plump right up. It's also excellent for dry cracked skin. Good luck!

a rabbit with a squirrel's tail to me. More pictures and info on the Russian Knife thread.

Here is an eBay purchase that arrived in the mail today: a worn Case 10-dot bareheaded trapper. It still has great opening snap, but is mushy on closing. I believe that a deep cleaning and some Quick-Release oil will fix it right up. I may make a plain shield for it, and that is about all that plan to do with it, other than sharpening the blades and dropping it into my EDC rotation.
It has a dimple on each side of the pin, but I don't think I will repin it at this time.

While traveling today for work I saw a Flea Market, and spent my lunch break walking around there. I found several goodies:

Boker Tree Brand

This Boker is one of my favorite finds. The pen blade is broken and the one-arm blade needs to be reprofiled, but these warm old bone handles are GORGEOUS! The blades are tight and snappy. I plan to dig around in my shop this week: I am fairly sure that I have a Boker blade to make this one right again!

3 Shrades and A Kutmaster

Next were a couple of 80T's and an 885UH. I should have new blades in stock for these.
The Kutmaster TL was in the bottom of a toolbox. The screwdriver blade is the only good part on it, and the owner said that I could have it! I paid him $0.50 to assuage my conscience.

I paid $20 for these two Swiss Army knives. The smaller Victorinox looks like the twin to the one that I rehandled on Saturday, but it wound up being 85mm rather than 91. The one with pliers is a Wenger, and after cleaning it is in amazing shape. It even has the tweezers and toothpick, and a 1/4" socket for bits! I may try to make a sheath for it and use the thing. It is a bit too much for a pocket.

And some old tools

The Topspec (England) cutters, pliers, and the Erwin hacksaw are all for use in the shop. The old hand drill just looked like a fun project. Each of these tools were just $1 each!
This was a fairly productive day of shopping, and I spent less than $40 in total!

Very nice David, I have one of those on my "Wishlist" just waiting to be paid for! These are considered to be THE original Russian folding knife! Also, there's a seller on ebay, "empire_ of_knives" who is selling all the same knives at similar prices that are in the "russianknives.com" link you posted should you wish to do business closer to home. Congratulations! EDIT:-I'm sorry David, when I clicked-on your link the site had a "Russian" feeling so I ASSumed they were in Russia, and, when I read in your post, "They are located in Batavia, IL.", I also ASSumed the "IL." was a European country. I really need to stop making an "ASS" of myself!

Awesome finds! That Wenger is a PocketGrip. I think another part goes on the piece to actually hold bits, but even those usually cost more than that $20 you paid.

Great group of old tools as well. I still mostly use tools made prior to the 1980s. I have two (one '80s 1/2 Craftsman, one new Hitachi 5/8) corded drills for concrete and metal, but for most woodworking jobs, I have a Millers Falls 2-A from the 1950s that gets the most use; and is usually seen for quick fixes around the house and woodworking. I bought some Mikov knives from a seller in MO specializing in woodworking tools, and one of the items I could get free given what I spent was a set of Colt and Riss French-made drill bits. The problem was that the reason they were free with such a low threshold ($30) was because Colt and Riss had gone out of business. Stinks, as these are one thousand times better than the crap from most home improvement stores.
