Unique switchblade

Of all the autos I’m enjoyed holding, a Schrade 4 blade, 4 button 4 lock was the winner for me! Only one was made, that I know of, and never made it to production. It’s on the cover of a book I wrote about autos that was never printed sadly. Thanks for listening Terry Lee Shuler

I'm not aware of one and it might be a prototype that came from the Ellenville collection that was broken up in the bankruptcy. Rich Langston might know.

That’s the cover of my book that was detoured by a fellow collector. It shows the 4 blade knife plus a zipper that I used to own. And yes I’ve also have written 3 books on Volkswagen history. Take care and enjoy our hobbies!

Its great to see switchblades available on EBay from time to time, before they remove the knife since they have their rules, I was lucky to pick up a Schrade Walden 4 1/4” hunter and a rough ShurSnap. I’ll have additional information on the 4 blade Schrade Walden soon. Keep searching and you will find the elusive blades out there my fellow collectors!

Terry Lee Shuler back again...what follows is my first installment pertaining to information on the interesting 4 button/4 blade Schrade auto:

This envelope contains a letter from Gilbert Schrade son of J. Lewis Schrade co-founder of Schrade Cutlery Co. 1904. Gilbert Schrade describes within this letter the rarity of the four blade button knife. To whomever might be interested-Early in the twentieth century, 1904 to be exact, a thirty year old visionary young man-eager, enthusiastic, energetic, aspiring, had a dream! His name was J. Lewis Schrade, who, I am proud to say, was my father. He had just completed a year-long tour of all the major pocket knife manufacturing centers of Europe-England, Germany, Sweden, France, to name a few. His dream-to return to the U.S. utilizing what he had learned, build a small factory, start and operate a pocket knife manufactory of his own. This he did! A barely adequate two-room plant was erected in the tiny village of Walden, N.Y. The company was named the Schrade Cutlery Co. - and from this humble beginning evolved one of the great cutlery names in the whole world!

Partly his dream was to produce a line of pocket knives of the very brightest possible quality, second to none! Along with two brothers as co-owners, some borrowed capital and a mere handful of employees, his dream late in 1904 slowly became a reality! Late in 1904, the first reliable pocket knives were offered for sale and were bought by people who were to become very satisfied customers for the next forty-plus years.
