Chat Rooms?

Post by Bryan »

Here's an old point of discussion I'd like to get some input on.

I'm guessing a lot of members don't know we had a chat room back in AAPK's earlier years. We removed the first version of it because the software had a security problem. It was not open source, so I really couldn't see if I could find or fix the problem. Tried a couple other versions, but I was never able to identify one that I felt was worthy of dedicating the required time & resources to keep around.

Anyways...

There was some enjoyable stuff going on with the first version on occasion. We had makeshift auctions there, for example that were always fun.

I've had more time on my hands than usual recently & I've been playing around a bit with a chat software that's pretty good ...even better, it's something I think I can modify into a really good/ user friendly product that's conducive to doing auctions/picture sharing/immediate communication & other things that might be of interest.

I know AAPK's membership has really evolved since the chat room was a thing around here. I also don't remember exactly how all us "old timers" who are still active members felt about the idea of bringing it back when the idea was floated from time to time years ago.

realizing just now this is getting long winded

Does anyone think they would like to see an addition to AAPK that would allow for chat style communication with quick picture sharing built in? Maybe there's a better format I should look at...? Something with more facebook-like communication features, for example (the good parts only, of course); or Reddit like, or twitter like, or whatever ::shrug::

You pose a very good question, and would love to see other members thoughts and opinions. ::tu:: Bryan you are obviously very computer literate and up to speed with software and such, i am an old geezer and no very little about such matters. But i don't participate in social media, it is something i have no interest in and don't want to participate in. My fear is if we go down the Facebook, twitter, reddit or whatever it my attract the keyboard warriors and have AAPK infiltrated by not the sort of people we desire here. I fully understand that times change, which many older people don't particularly like, and you have to adapt and change with them to stay relevant, but me personally would hate to see AAPK hijacked by people who were not necessarily just pocket knives lovers. Just my thoughts but i my be wrong, but interesting food for thought. :)

A chat application would be beneficial especially if it allowed for picture sharing. I’m assuming you’re talking about an AAPK specific chat app?
I don’t have a Facebook account and I’m not a regular user of social media.
Thanks.

..anything down that route would certainly be quite a balancing act.

Maybe a guy would be better off being savvy in psychology and/or sociology over technology to decide on such matters ::doh::

Thanks for weighing in, Jeff. It would 100% be on AAPK's server for AAPK members only. Customized and modified specifically to facilitate cool and useful things to do at AAPK.

Cool! I personally think it’d be a great addition to AAPK. We already have the ability to e-mail and IM so adding chat capabilities might be a nice addition.
Thanks Bryan!

It would be a change that not all would welcome :D but maybe the right time to try it ::tu:: The facebook crowd would fit right in . Between Facebook & Ebay (Us Flippers :D :D :D mostely know as dealers ::tu:: ) that's whats driving the price of knives up right now & both have a huge audience . I guess it would be like your TV if you don't like what your watching you can change the channel ::handshake:: ::tu:: ::tu:: ::tu::

I'm not a big chatroom guy. I type too slow and I'm too wordy - by the time I post in a chatroom, the room has changed topics a dozen times. I'm also on the West Coast, and I've noticed most of the posts here happen earlier in the day. You folks must go to bed early... ::tounge::

Thanks for adding your input Gary.

I want to be clear to everyone that the format of the forum would be completely unchanged & access to any chat-like application would require a voluntary entry. Like a door. No one would have to go in, but we could if/when we choose.

Could you see yourself dropping in to bid on a live auction from time to time or just watching one? ...Like if there was a scheduled day and time set up every so often where members could take turn auctioning items. (we used to do that on Thursday nights years ago).

Perhaps a room could be dedicated to trading. ...or maybe an add-on where members could store pictures of knives that they would trade that are publicly viewable... then a this for that? type discourse could take place ::hmm:: just thinking out loud now ... kind of brain storming

Sounds like a good idea Bryan. I'm like TFL a slow typer and probably couldn't keep up but I'd certainly check in on an auction. As long as the forum remains intact I say go for it.

I detest Facebook, twitter etc. and the big reason I came to AAPK was because everyone here was civil. They encouraged and supported one another instead of all the hate and 4 letter speech I saw on other sites. Most of those sites are XXX rated while I believe and tell others that AAPK is still PG. I would hate to see AAPK inundated with those that don't know a clip blade from a axe, they just want to argue about events or politics.

I'm relatively new around here (though not exactly a young guy), and though not terribly active on the forum, I do like to read what's posted, and have learned a lot of useful information. Not sure how much I'd use a chatroom, but I'm certainly not against the idea. Using it for a live auction scenario might be fun.

I would certainly hope that, with the same group of people, we would maintain the same civility and decorum. And unlike Twitbookgram, wouldn't a moderator have the capability of shutting down any discussion (or person) who acts inappropriately?

The chat room was functional when I joined AAPK. I didn’t frequent it but one evening out of curiosity (or maybe it was boredom  ) I dropped in. I found myself in the midst of a fracas between two members who were ranting and calling each other names. One was accusing the other of dishonesty related to some auction he had held. The other was trying to defend himself - it was ugly.

I quickly and quietly ducked out and never entered chat again. Next thing I knew it had been de-activated. Always wondered if that fracas I happened onto was a contributing factor to its demise. ::shrug::

Pardon my ignorance Bryan, but should I think of a chat room as being like a Zoom call? Is a chat room something that is always open and folks just wander in and out or does it have a posted schedule of topics? Does it have a leader or moderator?

Well interesting. As Edge 213 said ,let’s give it a try . It would be nice to chat with more members . Have many questions about this or that and wonder would it be live like Skype or one of those type gigs ? Not very tech savvy so would have to figure out how to participate at this end but am willing .

I like the idea of the chat room. Back in mid 90's I had my own web page that had a chat room. You could drop in and chat and share pictures and URL's if a person wanted to. Not sure how that works today. Back when I did it HTML3 was what I used. Today I'm totally ignorant as I have not kept up. But I'm for it. I would love to chat with others and exchange information with out using the PM's.

I remember the chat room from when I first came on board. Tried it a few times but couldn't keep track of who was saying what and who was responding to what. I finally just stopped frequenting it (not like I was a regular to begin with). That said, there were any number of members who mourned the passing of the chat room but those folks have almost all moved on down the road. All that to say, I probably wouldn't use it.

How about turning this thread into a survey or starting a survey thread? A majority rules kind of thing. Just a suggestion.

The term "Chat Room" was probably a poor choice of wording on my part. It's pretty generic and could include a lot of different applications. I really don't know a better term to use to identify what I'm thinking, though ::doh:: .

I believe it will be easier to put up a working example we can use to try out & explore what can be modified to better suite the community than to try to explain from ground zero. So i think that's what I'll do.

Maybe we'll later do a poll to see if it's worth keeping around &/or improving on. ::tu::
