Re: Show off your fixed blades!
It came with a stout leather sheath that fits snugly over the blade. The sheath is 'older' but probably not original. Back 100 or more years ago some (many ?) Scandinavian knives did not come with a sheath. These knives were not specifically made for outdoor use. They were often used in the kitchen or workshop. If you wanted a sheath you were expected to make your own.edge213 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 1:36 amDo you have the original sheath?kootenay joe wrote: ↑Mon Aug 30, 2021 11:19 pm Here is a neat older knife, 8 3/4" OAL, full tang, marked: "Sweden/ORR & Lockett/Hdwe Co./Chicago".

Hence i do not know if it was originally sold with a sheath or not. I wonder if there ever was a ORR & Lockett catalog ?

Nice! That has to be among the oldest surviving Mora-type knives out there, let alone in that condition. Probably the nicest survivor there is.

Thank you. It feels perfect in hand as well. Perfect balance so it feels ready to cut when you hold it.cody6268 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 4:37 pmkootenay joe wrote: ↑Mon Aug 30, 2021 11:19 pm Here is a neat older knife, 8 3/4" OAL, full tang, marked: "Sweden/ORR & Lockett/Hdwe Co./Chicago".

As to age, i wonder if Goins is correct in giving only one year (1901) when this marking was used ? Would be nice to find a second independent reference that concurs.

The stamp on the guard puts the knife as having been made in 1973 to 1976. The guard stamps began in late 1967, but the reference to BOULDER COLO was dropped from the stamp, being replaced with USA starting in 1973, and ending in 1976 as date codes were added to the stamps of all knives beginning in 1977.Ivoryman wrote: ↑Sun Aug 29, 2021 10:34 pm Oldest brother passed recently and we all just went to visit his wife for the first time. She was selling off most of his stuff. I"ve been looking for a nice old fixed about this size anyway, and my cousin has one very similar to it, so bought it from her. She said fifty bills would do so I jumped on the 'ol Western USA W88. Also grabbed his '70-80s Remington black nylon and chrome .22 rifle semi auto. Couldn't pass up a chance to get two heirlooms which are my only things of his that I have. So it was cool to get exactly the kind of older knife I was looking for except that I was looking for stag. Nevertheless, I can live without stag and would rather have my brothers personal hunting knife than something from someone else with no family history. Had to clean it up a bit because of improper storage, which leaving in leather sheaths or slips always is. Don't make the mistake if you don't know already as I assume most here do. But after getting the green pasty crud off with some rubbing alcohol and a paper towel, I just wiped it down with some soft leather and a soft cloth. Then a little wood wax on the handle good to go. In the past I would throw a little metal polish on the steel and brass and really clean it up, patina and all. But this one had some character I didn't want to alter. You can tell on the blade where the patina ended, and didn't go all the way. You can see the finger guard had more develop probably from finger oils and sticks out and gets in stuff. Scratches on the wood and pommel. I just left them there so you can see where and what was affected more or less. Mostly just removed the crud. More info to be gleaned from it than if I polished all that out. Anywho, Here's some pics. Great knife, so happy with the construction and quality build. Feels great in hand. Like the look too. Here's the before and after.

Here is a hard to find Russell bowie hunting knife marked "J. RUSSELL & Co. GREEN RIVER WORKS". Original blade finish. Sheath is stamped "Browning Bros. Co. Ogden Utah" with number 7.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

VERY nice! Congrats. on finding it.
A pocket knife is still an intimate personal possession of the individual who carries it and consequently deserves the best of materials, finish and workmanship in its production. (Quoted from Boker's 1928 cutlery catalog).

Well, after that beautiful Russell I guess I am slumming but here it is. Seller thinks it possible that it was a gift to her Dad in December of 1946. Otherwise, soon after.
