This bad boy is ready for the most recalcitrant dandelion or dismembering marmots. Better (I think) as a collectible. It is very large and heavy. It was marketed as an 1861 Bowie. Doug Webber posted two different examples sometime back before he passed away, and that alerted me to their existence. Yes, it was made by Schrade, but there were some later ones made overseas for AG Russell as well. They were not as good (LOL). The blade is hollow ground, but the sabre-ground top section is not quite what you think; that section is ALSO hollow-ground! Even so it is still a heavy whacker. I wish it came with the sheath. It did not but I will post Doug's image of the proper sheath. The handle on this one is micarta, but apparently there were other materials, including ironwood and some kind of stabilized burl. I disremember the steel.

This one has Carbon weave bolsters with Woolly Mammoth Ivory. Black G10 liners with copper accents and mosaic pins. Thanks for looking.

Oldest brother passed recently and we all just went to visit his wife for the first time. She was selling off most of his stuff. I"ve been looking for a nice old fixed about this size anyway, and my cousin has one very similar to it, so bought it from her. She said fifty bills would do so I jumped on the 'ol Western USA W88. Also grabbed his '70-80s Remington black nylon and chrome .22 rifle semi auto. Couldn't pass up a chance to get two heirlooms which are my only things of his that I have. So it was cool to get exactly the kind of older knife I was looking for except that I was looking for stag. Nevertheless, I can live without stag and would rather have my brothers personal hunting knife than something from someone else with no family history. Had to clean it up a bit because of improper storage, which leaving in leather sheaths or slips always is. Don't make the mistake if you don't know already as I assume most here do. But after getting the green pasty crud off with some rubbing alcohol and a paper towel, I just wiped it down with some soft leather and a soft cloth. Then a little wood wax on the handle good to go. In the past I would throw a little metal polish on the steel and brass and really clean it up, patina and all. But this one had some character I didn't want to alter. You can tell on the blade where the patina ended, and didn't go all the way. You can see the finger guard had more develop probably from finger oils and sticks out and gets in stuff. Scratches on the wood and pommel. I just left them there so you can see where and what was affected more or less. Mostly just removed the crud. More info to be gleaned from it than if I polished all that out. Anywho, Here's some pics. Great knife, so happy with the construction and quality build. Feels great in hand. Like the look too. Here's the before and after.

Here is a neat older knife, 8 3/4" OAL, full tang, marked: "Sweden/ORR & Lockett/Hdwe Co./Chicago".
Goins gives a date for this marking as 1901, making it 120 years old if he is correct.
