What's your favorite type of fixed blade?

Mine.... ALL THE ABOVE! But, I would have to choose a drop point over all.

Hands down - its a drop point. There are times where a bird and trout knife is what I favor though! AND NEVER, a guthook - hate them, the way they look - ruins the profile of a good knife! I never saw any real use for them - a gimmick.

I totally agree with Hukk on the gut hook.....a useless gimmic that ruins the looks of an otherwise decent knife. I don't and won't own one.
I've cleaned enough deer to feed a small army and never saw a need for one.

Don't know if it's true or not but I once read that the original purpose of the guthook was for lifting a coffee pot by the handle when cooked on an open fire. Then someone got the idea to sharpen it and the rest is history.

I've only had a request once in almost 20 years of custom knifemaking to make a guthook. I didn't like making it and don't like them.

I suppose it would depend on the application, for me.

I really like a semi-skinner, because it allows for a little more "belly" in the edge. Followed closely by a 3 3/4" drop point. But I wouldn't use either one, in the kitchen, or fileting fish, for example.

Come to think of it, a Marble's Woodcraft would be pretty high on my list, as well. Hmmmm??

Difficult question, but thankfully, there are a world of choices !

i have a old mini bowie made by premier its the H48 with a nickle silver finger gaurd hollow ground from soligen germany. It is my favorite to date because i have no knife yet that can hold a better edge. Its not a pretty knife its a knife made for a job like skinning a moose with out sharpening it once. I would like to see a knife that can do that other than my ugly old bowie. kellyw

This is a difficult question to answer because so much does depend on the application. What is my favorite fixed blade for one activity would be totally unsuited for another. For large game without a doubt my favorite is my old Gerber Flayer. It performs better than anything else I have tried when it comes to separating skin from meat on deer sized and larger critters.



However for general camp and wood chores for when I am out but not hunting is a much less specialized knife. This custom made from a Nicholson file with micarta scales is a favorite camp blade.



Now for sheer aesthetics, knives that I like for their looks as much as their functionality are the fighters. I don't really need these but they are the most pleasing design to the eye in my opinion and I enjoy owning them simply because. One of my favorites in my collection is this custom O'Neill.

I have always had a love affair with the Bowie Knife especially the massive old style ones. It may not be the most practical choice for field use but that wasn't the question was it?

Right now my favorite full tang knife is the SOG Mini-Pentagon.It's legal to carry here in TN & just the perfect size. The kydex sheath works great too. I will have to sand the edges on the sheath a bit to keep it from chafing my skin.

My favortite EDC using fixed is this Bark River Imp. A modified spear? Shown with a Pro Scapel.

I would say a good camp knife, that homemade Nicholson is pretty damn nice
