If it's buffalo you should be able to see at least a few strands somewhere along the handle, especially with a loupe. Might also be some small "dots" at the ends, which would be the cut off ends of the strands.

Re: Taylor witness stockman.
It looks like synthetic to me, hard to tell now that you buffed it.
Take the back side of the knife and rub it briskly against a pair of jeans or a cotton rag and then smell the handle, if its synthetic or organic you will be able to tell the difference.

G'day again Paul! Thanks for responding to my message; it , might be worth your while to log on to the site ' Paddy's potato peelers' on you - tube. He's an English bloke and he seems to be pretty keen on Taylors . As an aside I found my Dads T.W Barlow that he bought when he returned to the small Australian bush town after the second war & Korea.I found the knife after he died in 1986. In 1995 at 20 I sent away to the old knife shop in my home town where they still had an new one in its box in the windows for $50. Treasures..

Re: Taylor witness stockman.
That's a nice example which does not appear in pre-WWII Taylors catalogs. Enclosed is a Taylor catalog illustration from 1957 showing the posted knife in between two other similar models. Interesting to see it in a two-blade variation as well as a three-blade model with bolsters. The handles are probably Xylonite (English celluloid equivalent) which is listed as a material that Taylor used. Post-WWII catalogs are often a bit sketchy on information as compared to pre war catalogs. Nice knife and Taylor examples are not commonly found in the United States.
