QT, that Canal Street trapper is dead sexy! ::woot::

I just picked up these two. The medium stockman in molasses barnboard bone popped up when I was Bay fishing for a Carhartt chore coat. No bids and 7 minutes left, I figured what the heck. As far as the large stockman in micarta... I guess I thought the little one needed a friend.

Nice to see I'm not the only one who feels that knives sometimes need friends!

During my lunch break today, I was informed that three packages were delivered. I knew about the two Old Timers: a 33OT and a 77OT. Neither is perfect; I suspect the 33OT has a bent secondary, and the 77OT's main has been re-profiled. But they fill holes in my very incomplete Old Timer collection, and the 33OT got some oil and went into my pocket.

I couldn't for the life of me think of what the third package was. When I got home, I realized that it was the Wards camp knife I recently purchased from Ray, AKA Paladin! It'll be fun to learn who made this one (I suspect it may have been made for Montgomery Ward's department store). "400" is stamped on the pile sid of the tang.

By my rough estimates, I'd safely say '70's-80's manufacture.
Boker's been making this exact one since the end of WWII, so narrowing it down is difficult.
Bolster engraving is one clue to dating, as is the long key pull.
Could you snap a close up on the stamping mate, that'll help even further.

Received this one in the mail yesterday. Sun finally come out today, so I can take some pics. A new addition to my Craftsman family. A Craftsman 9473 Jr. Stockman. 3-3/8 inch closed, with Clip, spey, and pen blade. The handles are the redish brown composite, pre-delrin. It has the Craftsman shield without the crown. All blades have great snap, have some of the original luster but does have some scratches, spots and spiders. The 9473 was only made from 1958 to 1966. But in 1964 Craftsman Knives started having the Craftsman Shield with the crown surrounding the word Craftsman. Here are some pics.

I've noticed these knives for a long time, the G. Schrade Stainless Steel Hunting & Fishing Knife. As a user I never was interested, just looked kinda flimsy compared to my old #39 Queen or Case 6265's. After reading a little history about them I though it would be nice to have one in the pile. I figured one might show up on ebay that I could purchase. Well a few days ago this one came up, I was the only one to bid for some reason? ::shrug::
I was pleasantly surprised today! Solid lock up with the little lock on the top, no blade damage other than a few scratches, I'm happier than a dead pig in the sunshine! :)

That's a neat piece. I like the artwork on the handles.

I got another Old Timer in today: an OT18 "Mighty Mite" (such an apt name !). It needed a cleaning in a bad way, which has been done. Now it looks and snaps much better. A little sharpening and polishing may be in order yet.

Garry, the history of this pattern says this knife may be as new as 75 years or as old 96 years.

The saying, "Happy as a dead pig in the sunshine" came from an old neighbor that lived in the corner of our pasture back in 1973. His name was Mr. Charlie Weston Carter, born in 1898.
I don't recall hearing that phrase from anyone else but he used it quite often in his colorful conversations. He lived in a beautiful small house that he built with lumber that he and a brother-in-law salvaged from an old barn. Sad thing about it was the barn collapsed and killed his B-I-L and broke Mr. Carters leg at the end of the demolition project. The neighborhood moved all the salvaged lumber to his one acre lot and he put his house together. He dug a well in his front yard with a "water witch". At 13' they hit a spring that kept the water in the well cold enough to frost a glass in the summer time. He taught me how to build a fish/quail trap from chicken wire. He helped me plant my 1st 5 acre corn field. He took us to several churches in the community when we first moved to Washington County, made sure we got started "right".
The west side of his acre was adjacent to a small creek that flows only during wet times. He said the name of it was always "Bee Branch at the head of Flat Creek". Here he used the fish trap during high water times and he also used the same trap to capture lead free Quail in the Fall. One year I had given the high school football coach permission to quail hunt on our little farm. The coach had an old Chevrolet pickup that he hauled his bird dog around in. He always had starter trouble so he would let the old truck idle wherever he was hunting. One afternoon he parked on the bridge over Bee Branch and went up through the woods toward our field to see if he could find a covey of birds. The next day at school, the coach looked me up and said, "Philip, did ya' know your old neighbor is crazy?" "What are you talking about, Coach?, I answered. He said about the time he got to the old man's fence corner, Mr. Carter jumped out of the bushes and grabbed his old bird dog. Coach said the old man had an ax in one hand and my dog in the other! He then told me Mr. Carter asked him,"Do you want this dog in one piece or two?" I laughed when he told this to me and I told him he must have got close to the old feller's quail trap.
I could go on with a several more tales about Mr. Carter but for now he gets the credit for the saying, "I'm as happy as a dead pig in the sunshine!"

Thanks for the story Phil. Your neighbor sounds like a wonderful character. I have always enjoyed (good) characters thinking they add to the texture of life. I recall an encounter up in Northern Maine, not far from the Canadian border. I was trying to find where the tax assessor lived in order to pay my taxes. I walked into a small general store. The evident owner was talking to the single customer. I asked if they knew where Mrs. X might live. This provked a lengthy conversation between the two Mainers along these lines.

"Seems I've heard that name."
"Yeah, me too. Don't she live around here."
"She used to, I think. But she might have moved. Did you hear that she moved?"
"Not for sure. There was a rumor she ran off with all the taxes."
"You don't say."

This went on for a while, then the truth came out. Mrs.X was the wife of the shopkeeper and their house was right next door. I went to pay my taxes and found the assessor at the kitchen stove. She insisted I join her and her husband for lunch. We had porkchops.

If you have ever seen a dead pig that has been in the hot sun a while you would understand the phrase as their mouth draws to a huge smile. A very common phrase here in Texas. ::nod::

I received this yesterday and waited all day for the mailman. Finally got it an hour and a half before I went to bed.

Got this one in yesterday from that South American Jungle Store order. I know nothing about the maker other than I've seen them advertised across the interwebs and in a couple of sporting mags. It's a Lord & Field single blade , with Blue Denim Micarta scales, 4 inches closed, Spear point blade is 2.75", blade and liners are stainless and has a liner lock that locks up tight. The blade thickness is .102 with a flat grind. I just liked the look of the knife. It is tight, liner locks up tight and did come paper cutting sharp. I am sure this is a Pacific Rim produced knife, but will see how it does.
