Re: THE W & H CO + USA + NEWARK NJ = Whitehead & Hoag.
This is my latest Whitehead & Hoag pocket knife acquisition. It is a "THE W & H Co. - NEWARK NJ", "CHERRY RIPE", two blades (one is broken), 2 1/8" closed pocket knife. On the handle, it features two women wearing period clothing. I have to research "CHERRY RIPE" (besides the obvious "risqué" meaning). The broken blade stub is interesting because it is two "layers." It looks like there is a pivot pin, with some remaining metal, on the broken blade tang (the last picture). Could it have been a tool, instead of a blade? This example has the "block" style tang stamp. So far, it is the third style and the least common of the tang stamps for the "W & H" pocket knives that I've found. So, which cutlery company manufactured this style of pocket knife for the "W & H" company? I don't know and the investigation continues. However, from what I've seen/found so far, Whitehead & Hoag items with female and or "risqué" images are not very common at all. On this one, the remaining blade needed a little cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

The broken blade was likely a manicure blade. I have seen this type of blade construction on some smaller Colonial knives although I doubt they made that knife. Here are a couple pics of the Colonial file blade.New_Windsor_NY wrote: ↑Sun May 30, 2021 7:49 pmThe broken blade stub is interesting because it is two "layers." Would the 'risque' side have been the front or back side ? If it is the front side then it is the master blade that is broken off. Other 'risque' knives i have seen, the pictures are on the front side.

I'm guessing that the side with the image(s) is the back of the pocket knife.
I believe that the surviving blade IS the main blade.
I agree with knife7knut, aka Ray, that the broken stub (with pivot pin) was for a tool, not a blade.

Looks like a very fancy piece for the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. The blade with the cut out I thought at first might be a cigar cutter but I think it is like the one on this Camillus and the Syracuse knife.New_Windsor_NY wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 8:44 pm From a 1912 Whitehead & Hoag Catalog.

The blades on your two knives and the blades in the ad appear to be open at
basically the same angle. I would think that the bottom of the cap lifter/
bottle opener in the ad would be visible at that angle. Unless it's not a
cap lifter/bottle opener.

Re: THE W & H CO + USA + NEWARK NJ = Whitehead & Hoag.
There may be a couple of explanations for that.First the picture of the W&H knife is an illustration and not an actual photograph. It is possible that the part of the cap lifter might have been excised from the illustration for clarity. If the blade is not in fact a cap lifter, then there should be indications of a sharp edge on the curved part if it were a cigar cutter. Also if it were a cigar cutter then the radius would be somewhat smaller and more rounded rather than the elliptical shape that it is.New_Windsor_NY wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 10:21 pmThe blades on your two knives and the blades in the ad appear to be open at

This morning I added this, "THE W & H CO - USA - NEWARK NJ", single blade, 2 7/32" closed, fob/key ring pocket knife to my collection. This is my first fob/key ring pocket knife with this particular advertising that I've obtained. It came in a neat little souvenir holder from "KIAMESHA LAKE NY." The other side has "Sidney 1927" carved into it. I know that the knife and the holder are not an original match. I cleaned it up a bit (the knife), took some pictures and here it is.

This afternoon I added this, "THE W & H CO - USA - NEWARK NJ", single blade, 2 7/32" closed fob/pocket knife to my collection. This is the third fob/pocket knife advertising this particular company, "THE WHITEHEAD & HOAG CO.", that I've obtained. The other two have been previously posted under this topic/thread. Today I added this, "THE W & H CO - USA - NEWARK NJ", single blade, 2 7/32" closed, fob/key ring pocket knife to my collection. This is the first fob/key ring pocket knife advertising this particular business that I've obtained. Enough of the tang stamp remains to positively identify it. Today I added this, "THE W & H CO - USA - NEWARK NJ", single blade, 3" closed, all metal fob/key ring pocket knife to my collection. This is my first fob/key ring pocket knife advertising this particular company, "GEO. B. CARPENTER & CO. - 440 N. WELLS ST. - CHICAGO", that I've obtained. This is my fourth fob/key ring pocket knife that is this particular pattern or style. The other three have been posted previously under this topic/thread. Could this be another clue possibly linking ROBESON to the manufacturing process of these "W & H" fob/key ring pocket knives? My investigation continues. It didn't need to be cleaned. I took some pictures and here it is.

Really nice looking fob knife, Looks to be in excellent condition. I love promos that have an interesting history. The one on this company is really interesting. these advertising pocket knives. It can definitely make
some interesting reading.

The last time that I posted group pictures of my Whitehead & Hoag advertising pocket knives was back in March, almost four months ago. Since then, I've added some more to the collection. Enough have been added to deserve more group pictures. The pocket knives pictured are ONLY the Whitehead & Hoag advertising pocket knives that have a "W & H" tang stamp. The other "supporting cast" members are NOT included. Every pocket knife pictured here has been previously posted somewhere under this topic/thread.
