Herman Williams Schrade

Post by Unk »

I picked up an early Christmas present. I like the Schrade whittlers, and have been wanting one with stag handles. I was considering having one of my 863s customized, until I found this one available from Mr. Williams. :D

Merry Christmas,

A very meaty knife there.

Looks like a place to put on some Formb's Lemon Oil with a Q-Tip.

Thats what I would do to it.

Thanks for the nice comments, guys. That's an interesting suggestion on the lemon oil. I am not sure what is the best way to care for stag handles? ::shrug::

I usually just use Renaissance wax on the metal.

Any comments or feedback?

Thanks,
Unk

Lemon oil is a good way to keep stag from drying and stress-cracking, according to at least two custom makers I've talked to; one being Tony Bose. Smells nice too!
That is a nice unusual custom unk!!

Thought I'd keep this thread alive with another unusual Herman Williams custom. Ever seen a 5 bladed 858?? Big knife!!

The color on those Williams scales reminds me of some of the Canal Street scales. Any chance Mr. Williams may have had some input or influence on how they dye their bone ?

Well, I think Herman was dying them like that before Schrade closed! And he knows some of the people at Canal Street; but you would have to ask them, and draw your own conclusions! Side by side comparisons would reveal a lot - - - - -anyone got an example of each??

Sadly I do not own either, so a side by side is not possiable for me but here is a link to a picture of one of the Canal Street knives I am talking about.

That 5 blade is fantastic Charlie! I've never seen one like that before. I always liked Herman William's stag color, it's one of those easily identifiable things, you see a schrade, that color pops out and you just know it's his :) I never noticed the similarity with CSC's amber stag, but now that you mention it, I definitely see the resemblance.

Thanks for the nice comments, guys. UpNorth, that is a big ol' stockman. Nice one!

I bought my dad a Canal Street whittler with the amber bone for his birthday back in October. Next time I am up in Fort Worth for a visit I will try to remember to take pictures of the two knives side by side.
