Collecting Case knives - do they appreciate

I see a fair amount of discussion about collecting knives on the Case web site. My question is, does a Case knife that can be bought today for $50 or $60 dollar appreciate very much? Also what is the time frame to hold a knife to see any appreciation?

newer case knives are collectable. they do not appreciate much(exceptions do exist). time frame? your children might profit.

If you are looking at buying new Case knives strictly as an investment vehicle, you will likely be disappointed. The production numbers of most of them and the overwhelming selection of Case knives produced and marketed directly to the collector market tend to limit the likelyhood of significant appreciation in value, particularly over a relatively short period of time.

On the other hand, if you enjoy owning and collecting them, then the intangable value of the enjoyment derived from the collecting process may make it well worth your while. It really boils down to what your motivation for aquiring the knives is and that should determine whether you persue collecting them or not. I guess you could say it depends on whether YOU appreciate them or not.

I have always carried big modern folders like the Spyderco Military or Benchmade 710. This summer I got interested in whittling. I soon found that it is difficult to whittle with a 8 inch folding knife. I bought a Queen whittler and loved the fit, finish, beauty and qualty of the knife. My whittling also improved greatly. I have been buying whittlers every since to see how different brands, blade shapes and materials would affect my whittling. I now have 6 whittlers. I like them so much I usually buy two, one to sharpen and whittle with and one to preserve and collect. I was not sure if there was any monitary reason to collect these knives. Looks like there may not be in my lifetime but I shure do have fun buying them, collecting them and whittling.

One thing I did fail to mention is that, for the most part at least, if you buy a knife and put it up unused and protect it from rust or other harm, it should at least retain most if not all it's initial value even if it does not increase rapidly in value.

Right now I wish my 401K investments had just retained their initial value.

If it's something you enjoy and something you can afford, why not treat yourself to a knife now and again. You could be spending your money on a LOT worse things than a good knife.

My brother got on my case a few months back about what I spend on knives. I told him I didn't spend any more on knives than he does on beer and a week after I buy a knife I still have it. A week after he buys beer, even the hangover is gone!

My knives are my 401k. They bring me alot more satisfaction right now than the money I'd be losing in a 401k, though I might be sorry later on.

I think that a knife is kinda like money in the bank. When you are tierd of looking at it or if you need money for an emergancey you can sell a good knife for a profit or at least get most of your money back.
So ask your brother to save all his beer cans for a year and you take all of your knives that you buy for the year, each of you cash in and see who wasted the most money.
