Rough Rider Large Boxes - Love 'em - Hate 'em - No Opinion

The first couple I received, I thought were kinda cool but now I intensely dislike them. I keep all the boxes the knives come in and have boxes of boxes. The large Rough Rider boxes take up waaaay too much room.

It's a wash for me, Jerry....they're kinda neat, but way too big.

The perfect box for me is like Camillus made Remingtons came in...or most any knife-sized removeable top box. I hate the little carboard boxes that open on the end more than I dislike RRs large boxes.

I'd take the foam inserts out and use 'em for other stuff. If you need a really strong magnet, just cut it out of the lid. I buy RRs solely as users. Great way to try an odd pattern, or have a beater version of a more expensive USA-made pattern. I bought a Classic Carbon series Folding Hunter for use as a work knife, and I use its box for storing my "nice" Folding Hunter, a '65-69 Case 6265 Folding Hunter. Surprisingly, the insert fits the Case well.


In my opinion, the best knife boxes ever made are those Moore Maker uses. Felt-lined, removable top.

My case against them is that well, for the cost of nearly every Rough Ryder is that a decent carbon steel American-made user can be had for just as much. My "cheap" knives are usually Antonini from Italy, Joker from Spain, and Mikov from the Czech Republic.

Hate 'em...Never have been a fan of "overpackaging", i.e., excessive, non-essential, resource-wasting, space-taking, etc., which, IMO, is simply a distraction designed to create the illusion that the knife inside is extra special and worth more than it really is. YMMV.

I recently picked up two "Rough Ryder Reserve" knives...they came in a metal can (tube). I can't help but wonder if this is an attempt to elevate the RR brand image by copying the GEC tube concept. But, regardless of the reason, I much prefer the metal tube to the large box since I, too, save all original boxes/tubes, paper inserts, tissue paper wrappers, etc., and the tubes are so much easier to store. For that same reason, I actually prefer the Case boxes; although my favorite knife boxes are the two-piece Queen / Schatt & Morgan boxes.

Hate them. I feel like I’m wasting money on packaging. I don’t save boxes. I don’t have the space. I think it’s ridiculous.

I collect knives not boxes.

My Randall knives come wrapped in construction paper in a plain brown box. This is the way.

I totally agree with Q's reasoning, the more box, the bigger the footprint they'll leave, and since they're completely unnecessary it amounts to nothing but a big waste! JMHO.

I usually wear,"MM" size.(Medium Massive) Only have a couple of Rough Rider knives and neither one of them came in boxes.

I've no opinion one way or the other. Though I prefer boxes over clamshells, I buy a knife because I like the knife. Its packaging is ultimately a secondary concern to me.

Agreed. Back on topic. I have noticed that before the '70s, most knives that were sold rarely even had individual boxes. Usually, they were sold by the half-dozen or dozen in a box, but the knives themselves rarely had any packaging aside from a wax paper wrapper. It's rarely done today. Excluding odd European brands (who seem to rarely use boxes on lower-end lines), I have only had one Utica, in the countless amount of modern production knives I've bought in the past 15 years, actually come bulk-packed. All it had was a wax paper wrapper.

Yep. Almost all knives (left myself a little wiggle room with that "almost") come in some kind of individual container these days, be it box, tube, clam-pak, etc, etc. The only issue I have with packaging would be the clam-paks and those huge RR boxes. The clam-paks I get because those are usually found in a big box store (Menards, Lowes, Walmart, etc) so they need to hang and self advertise. The RR boxes? Get real SMKW. Are you trying to class up the act?

Have you considered that once I draw my last breath, my children/grandchildren will probably sell my accumulation & buyers prefer that recent knives (which most of mine are) come in their original box? If you want to throw yours on the burn pile, that's your choice but I don't see that as a good decision in my world. Granted they may not bother themselves with matching up the knife with the box but at least they have a choice.

I'm the same way....I buy knives because I like knives. I am hardly a collector and generally couldn't give a hoot about dollar value because I won't ever sell them. I don't ever sell much of anything. But still, I save knife boxes.

Some day someone will end up selling them. Might as well keep things intact if I can.

I have several rough ryders and use them, as far as being collectable, Chinese knives will never be worth more than you paid for them.

Just me and how I do it. I never buy a knife with the thought that I will at some point in time sell it. I hate selling with a passion.

Yeah, I tend to keep the boxes to most new things I buy. Doesn't have anything to do with collectability. Some I keep, some eventually get in my way and find their way to the recycling bin.

I used to believe "a chinese knife will never be worth more than you pay"...but not so sure its true anymore.

I do the same. And in my case, it also has nothing to do with future value. The box serves as a way to store and identify anything that isn't out on display or in active use.
