What's your favourite size pocket knife ?

Post by zed6309 »

Recently I've been carrying smaller pocket knives, especially at work as I'm a HCA in a large nursing home and I've no need for a bigger knife, but this recently has drifted into my daily carry , I find I can do all daily tasks just as well with a smaller blade, for nearly 18yrs I carried a SAK and I know I used the smaller pen blade as much as the larger main blade , so what is your favourite sized pocket knife for daily edc ::tu::
Here is a pic of my favourite daily carrys and jumbo C.K and 8ot for size comparison ::tu::

Nice array of EDCs, Paul. ::tu::
My favourite carry is a 3 1/2" 2 blade jack, usually my Case 6235 1/2.

That green Case is a looker!

Generally speaking, I've discovered that I like to carry larger knives. Currently it's a Case CopperLock. Soon a Trapper will rotate into my pocket. A Sod Buster Jr. is on its way to me, and a Large Stockman will be purchased soon.

However, smaller knives have their place in my selection of carriers. The 58mm Swiss Army knives fit in most any pocket and also work well on a neck lanyard. On those rare occasions that I'm in a setting where a large knife isn't appropriate, I'll bring along a Case Peanut.

Any number of different patterns and sizes could find their way into my cabinets. I like a varied display.

I prefer a larger knife. When I worked in an office my EDC for years was a Case 18 pattern medium stockman (3-1/2 inches). After retiring to the ranch, my EDC rotation includes a Case 47 stockman or occasionally a Schrade 881 stockman (both ~4 inches). Seems the things I need a knife for tend to be more conducive to a bigger knife. For things like cleaning fingernails and opening mail the big ones work just as well as a smaller one, but tougher tasks require a better grip than I can get on a small knife.

I occasionally carry a little knife, but mostly they are over 3 1/2 inches closed for the pocket, and anything goes for the belt. I love them all, fat, short or tall.

For me the size of the blade is first priority. The handle can be up to 4 1/4 inches but ideally, I need a blade that's 2 - 2 3/4 inches. I also prefer single blade folders with a pinchable blade.

That narrows down my options quite a bit so I've settled into single blade folders that are 3 1/8 to 3 3/4 inches closed. I usually get the approximate blade length that I need from those.

3 1/4" to 4"
I have and will carry up to 4 1/4.
I don't like to go any smaller than the 3 1/4"

For smaller situations, I pocket carry the Buck 379 Solo. On my belt, in a leather sheath, I now carry my new Finch Holiday Snakewood flipper.

Weekends, after work: muskrats, 47's, full sized trappers
M-F: Carry most anything from 3-1/4" to 3-7/8"
NYC meetings: Calls for the wee knives, mostly single blade peanuts and suchlike.

2 1/2" - 3 3/4" is my favorit size range. I doesn't have to be this size but these sizes will get the most pocket time by me. ::nod::

A lot of times it depends on the knife. For instance my sweet spot is 3 7/8-4 1/4. Most of the time I carry something like a Case 75 pattern, a Camillus 89, or one of the jumbo Boker whittlers. That size just seems to fit my hands better. But if I’m woodworking I prefer a Camillus 72, go figure!

3 7/8 inch to 4 1/4 inch. I like a single blade, makes a thinner knife and I seldom use the other blades on a stockman, for example. I like large Copperlock, Tribal lock, or more modern lockbacks in this size range.

As i have aged i found that i no longer need a large knife as a carrier, handy for jobs around the place and in the kitchen but not necessarily in the pocket. My ideal EDC size is now 3 and 3/8 inches. Just works out a perfect size for my pocket and needs. :)

3 3/8" and up.
Since a standard trapper is 4 1/8" I guess that's my favorite size.

Case 47 Stockman and Case Muscrat are my favorite carry knives. So 3 7/8 is my favorite size. :) I do like my 72 for woodworking.

I've carried a 1993, Case 9220 Peanut for years. I have used it for opening the mail, cutting seat belts at accident scenes and yes for picking my teeth. When I go into the woods hunting or to my cabin I carry others. These include my old Kinfolks single blade lock back, a 1979 Case 2104L BLACKHORN, a KA-BAR 1446 and a SOG Multi tool. It's time to retire the old Peanut but I haven't decided what to replace it with.

I think the last line of your post hits the nail on the head. I have large hands and I just can’t hold on to a peanut sized knife. Less than 3.5 inches and it just isn’t comfortable at all for me to hold a knife.

I don’t know what it is about the 72, but it handles like a much bigger knife for me. When wood working I use the small clip blade more than the other two and because of the size of the knife and that particular blade, it’s easy to close ti one handed, which is, well.....handy!

I agree Colonel! I am a Case man at heart, but wouldn't want to live without that 72 for long. Great little big knife! :)
