Shatt & Morgan Gowanda NY half whittler

I found a little knife I would enjoy seeing some others....this little knife is 3 inches long...a half whittler with 2 blades and bone handles
It is marked S & M Gowanda N.Y. .....the knife blades snaps good has a nice shield... although the handle has a crack it's solid...
I'm not familiar with the jigging on the handles...Both of the blades are marked S & M Gowanda N. Y.
I looked up the Shatt & Morgan marking in Goins Encyclopedia Pg. 243 and found this mark to be from 1897-1902

Looks like it's in very good shape for being over 100 years old. That Wharncliffe blade is right up my alley, too. I like it!

Just wondering if it could be the early form of the winterbone style that's used on Queen's knives

Beautiful old Cattaraugus County pocket. Similar to Case Bros. Gowanda, of the same vintage. C. Platts & Sons, like all cutlery manufacturers, especially of that era, made knives for many others.

I agree!!... I've seen that shield and handles on other knives Utica cutlery Co. for one....

I don't think so, but I haven't looked at nearly as many pocket-knives as other members of this board have.

The one thing for me that this knife says is the story Cattaraugus County, NY has played in the US cutlery history. If only this old knife could talk. I believe every knife has a story. I live in Cattaraugus County only seven miles from Little Valley. Everywhere you look in LV there is cutlery history including much of my own. It was from LV that so much manufacturing pushed to Gowanda, Pennsylvania, Ellicottville and Springville.

I agree with you on the knives if they could talk it would be great to listen about all the stories...places were they have been...ect
I have a lot of knives that are used almost up but I clean them up and still keep them and some are still useful... I just cleaned up a nice
Remington knife Circle Remington UMC (1924-1933) R100A.. today I found over the weekend...the blades are almost gone but handles are there and all parts as well!!
