Kutmaster Purina knife

Over the weekend I was lucky enough to buy a 2-bladed... Purina checkerboard knife approx. 3 1/2 inches closed....This knife has never been sharpened and looks to be in excellent condition... This is the first one I seen in a long time....It's my understanding that these were premium knives given away by the Purina feed company...…. Just curious how many companies made these knives and what time were they given away!!….I bought the knife for $25
I think I got a good deal on it.....Any information would be appreciated

Remington made some. Those I’ve seen in good condition were pricey. I did a ”Search” here for Purina and found 192 posts.

Thanks Ken! Yeah Remington would be pricey.... also I've have seen the CCC knives (Canton Cutlery Company) made in Ohio.....They were cheaper ones with pinned on scales
Does Purina still give the knives away I haven't seen any in years?

I haven’t seen any either. As much feed as I buy from them, I oughta have a whole case of them though.

Lol.... Being raised on a farm and knowing all the feed my dad and other local farmers bought over the years; I never heard of anyone receiving a knife!!
The story I heard was Purina gave knives away from the 1930's-1970's.... but to whom and what criteria used was never disclosed!!

It is 100% certain that when Remington was making these knives some were given as premiums for feed purchases.

Note that is dated 1938 and you had to buy a ton of chow to get one. Remington quit making knives around 1940 and I don't think Pal ever made a Purina knife? I have asked on here before about the dating of the Kutmaster tang stamps in order to see when Kutmaster first made a Purina knife and have never found the dating code for Kutmaster. I think it is logical to assume that some were given as premiums for feed purchases. I search Ebay almost everyday for Purina knives and have never seen a send in ad for a Kutmaster Purina knife. Maybe they were on the back of a dog food sack and were just considered too common to put up and save? I don't know. I also don't know what specific year Kutmaster quit making knives. Bayes, Canton Cutlery, and Ulster as well as others I'm sure made Purina knives. Was Kutmaster a brand name of Utica or were they 2 separate companies? Then sometime around the 1980's the forerunners of SMKW had a slew of the Kutmaster knives made in Japan. I assume it was after the brand name Kutmaster was out of business and they owned the rights to it? These knives came packed a dozen per box and if I recall sold for $24 a dozen. They had Japan in stencil on the blade and you could wipe it off with solvent. I don't know how you tell a Japan / Kutmaster from an original. Most of them were the 3 blade stockman pattern. Recently there have been Purina knives made in China. If you go to the Remington forum on here and search for the word Purina you can see many rare examples of the Remington Purina knives in beautiful condition. If you search Ebay today for Purina knife you will see a very rare example of a knife / letter opener combo.
There are more out there I'm sure.

I often look for Purina knives in Germany useing the German picclick. It almost always finds some but they are always on the U.S. Ebay. I have yet to find one over here. You all probably know picclick already but just incase someone does not, here is a Purina search from today on picclick.com.

I own two Purina's with two stamps on each of them. One says "UTICA STAINLESS" and the other says "Japan 32148".

And then I have a Boker/Kutmaster Hybrid Purina knife that DocB saved from destruction for me.

Ken & Jtx...I wasn't sure I had the Remington and CCC Purina knives but looking in my collection I found I do... but the Buck I haven't seen
Could there any others companies that made these knives so far Remington, CCC Canton Ohio, Kutmaster and Buck!!

Found this in my notes. This came from another collectibles forum back in the early 2000's.

The Purina checkerboard knives were originally made by Remington and Kutmaster. In later years, knives were produced by Buck and Camillus (with the CAMCO stamping), and even more recent knives tang stamped Bayles and CCC are found with the famous checkerboard pattern depicted on the sides. The original Purina knives were made during the 1930s by Remington, into the 1940s and into the 1950s by Kutmaster. Buck, Utica, Bayles, and the CCC stamped varieties are quite new, all made within the past few years.

And this was printed in Knife World in 1999, just in case anyone is interested.
Purina knives
The company behind the famous checkerboard symbol, Purina Mills, recently celebrated its 100th year anniversary. Founded by William H. Danforth in 1894, the Purina Company (originally called the Robinson-Danforth Commission Company) was the result of a partnership which was formed to produce animal feed, and operate a retail feed store. Danforth’s energy proved to be the key in pushing the young company forward into the next generation.

The use of the very famous checkerboard design is a story unto itself. According to Purina history, the story dates back to the time when the founder was a young boy growing up in Charleston, Missouri. As a helper in his father’s general store, young Will watched various families come into town to purchase their weekly supplies. One large company stood apart from the rest. All of the members of this family wore clothing made of bright red and white checkerboard material. Supposedly, this brightly colored design would help the parents easily find their children as they played in the town square while their parents purchased supplies. Years later, Purina founder Danforth remembered this bright checkerboard pattern and chose it for his company’s trademark

Also there were some that were produced by Providence Cut Co, Prov RI, and aso one with a Japan tang stamp, but I can't remember the maker. Here is a photo of one of the Providence knives.

Here's a REMINGTON, 4 blade with punch, blade etched, 1940 or before. Have a couple KUTMASTER's too. Seen Asian remakes too, not the same.

I have three Purina knives all different companies...Kutmaster.... CCC Canton ohio and Remington
I'm not sure how many compaines made these knives I've heard they were others

I wish I still had the knife or at least a picture of it. Was a Remington Purina pen knife with pearl scales. The Purina checker board logo was etched in the pearl. The two bladed knife was in near mint condition with blade etch. Sold it on ebay 15 plus years ago. Recall it selling for over $600. Never seen another one.
