Thanks Kerry! I was in the Patrol...but that was the U.S. Border Patrol. I did live for a year in Brunswick Ga, when I taught at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center located near there. I really liked my time in Ga, except when I was working outside in the summer time ....I was covered in sweat walking from my apartment to my car at 8AM as I was going into work. I think the humidity was about 1000% in July...
But all in all a very beautiful state

Thanks for the tip, I'll try the Pecard's Lotion. There is a coating on the handle that seems to be dried oil... maybe even motor oil?
I have peeled off a little bit at a time trying not to damage the leather underneath. But it is a slow process ... I am almost tempted to but it against the wire wheel on the grinder...almost, that is...

I downloaded one of the photos and enlarged it. It alsmost looks like someone might have painted on something similar to that liquid insulation product, or possibly liquid rubber? I've seen people put all kinds of unneeded things on leather handles. Paint, Shellac, Liquid Rubber, Silicone RTV, Electrical tape, duct tape, ect. Just take your time. You can soak it in mineral oil, it will cause the leather to swell a little, but really shouldn't be detrimental to the leather. It might make whatever is coated on the handle to turn loose. Then wrap an old towel around it and it will help pull some of the oil back out. The leather should tighten back up as some of the oil is displaced.But you can work on the blade during the time the handle is drying out.

Thanks! I am going to try the mineral oil soaking. I have found quiet a few fixed blades with leather handles with Electrical tape on the handles and I always expect a ruined handle underneath, however part of the time some guy just thought it was a good idea to wrap a good handle in Electrical tape...

Nice! That blade looks well suited to detail chores.

I've been looking at getting the Taylor version of the Pro Hunter/Loveless patterns (PH1, PH2). USA versions are somewhat hard to find, and rather expensive. The cheapest I've found is $60, and it was a knife that was not made in the Schrade factory, instead an aftermarket rebuild. Taylors on the other hand are around $25. The only problem I have is that original Schrades were wood or micarta handled, the Taylors are their somewhat cheap take on Delrin Stag. Easy rehandle I guess.

GSP, keep us posted on your process and end result. I wouldn't be surprised if someone did put some kind of rubber coating on the leather to improve grip, and then it dry rotted. Doesn't look like dried up Cosmoline from your pictures, which might be the easiest stuff to remove without killing the leather disks. Might need to replace them.

I have been soaking the blade in vinegar to remove the rust and maybe tomorrow I will post a picture. The pommel cleaned up nicely but I soaked that in a small amount of vinegar, trying to keep the vinegar away from the handle. The next step is to try a little soaking in mineral oil...

Today my wife's best friend asked us to stop by and price her husband's knives and buckles. The husband is in a nursing home and the kids picked out what they wanted of their Dad's and the rest is going into a rummage sale. She offered me any I wanted for what I considered a fair price. I listed the ones I wanted a little higher than I figured they were worth and bought these knives and buckles. There are two Kinfolks, a Western Boulder with a Boy Scout stamp, a Buck 703 and a Western combo missing the hatchet and sheath. We used to country dance with them so she gave me the Two Step buckle.____Dave
