Feeling “Blue”

Took me a while to find something blue. Finally came up with these.

Got in a new blue knife today. Robeson Mastercraft by Queen. I think this is called a fiddleback whittler, I know it’s a splitback spring whittler for sure. The blue jigged bone handles are beautiful on this one. The main blade has so much pressure on it that it is actually hard to close, which is the way it’s suppose to be on a splitback whittler so the blade doesn’t close on you. I really like the old school way this knife was made and fit and finish is excellent.

Very nice! Does it have a touch of purple, or is that a trick of the lighting and/or camera?

Dan, I think that’s a trick of the light, it’s a nice even blue color, except on the edges where there is always less dye.

I've noticed that, so I'm only too happy to share. Pictured below, top to bottom: Victorinox Classic SD in (modern) sapphire, Victorinox Classic SD in dark blue/(original) sapphire, Victorinox Classic SD in blue, and Case Mini Stockman celebrating the U.S. Navy.

Victorinox used "dark blue" and "sapphire" concurrently (sometimes both names were on the box), and the color is sadly discontinued. I spent at least a couple of hours thinking that knife was black, but it's a very dark blue. The below photos show the color a little better.

Nice Dan. I have 3 or 4 of those SAK’s myself. I keep around extra springs for the scissors, I wear them out fast.

Thanks! They do come in mighty handy. I also have one with a badly bent scissors spring, which I imagine can be tricky to replace. Am I correct?

Dan, not at all. I got a bunch of these from Smokey Mountain Knife Works. I think they were 1 dollar a piece. That was less expensive than sending them to Victorinox for free repair.
Just put a small screwdriver on the loop of the spring down in the housing and push or tap it right out. Insert the replacement spring the same way, push it in or tap it in. It’s a very easy fix. Which comes in handy since that is what wears out first on all my SAK’s.
I have extra springs for all my different size SAK’s. It keeps me from having to buy a new knife each time one of these springs wears out, which is why I have so man of them.

According to Monkey logic, it's the Blue Scroll blade etch that qualifies it to make an appearance in this thread.

Ditto what Mark said Iman. Almost never do I see abalone well captured in a photo. But you did it. Congrats. I sometimes think of the divers off the California coast who gather abalone, if it is still allowed. Where they dive is also enjoyed by Great Whites. That alone makes abalone extra valuable to me.

Thought I would revive this old thread. Got in the beautiful Henckels Trapper last week. Love pin feather jigging, especially on blue bone.
