Case Knife pattern and handle question

Post by hotrodlynn »

I have a Case XX 3 Dot (1987) Trapper, it has a pattern number of BO 200, I was told it was Grey Bone but can find no reference to it anywhere? Does this one sound familiar to anyone? I have had it since it was new in 1987.

the 200 pattern was once used on a citrus or melon pattern. on a different frame, a 4' trapper (jack with equal length blades) used the 200 pattern. the 254 pattern is the current trapper.

yours might be a club knife or sfo.

how about a picture?

I have always wondered why Case didn't just call this pattern a 49sp instead of 200 as the frames are pretty much identical on the older ones anyway

It's important to understand that Case did retire pattern numbers only to pick them back up at a later time on a different knife. The original big copperhead trapper is a pre WWII knife, both the one and two blade melon testers came along during the XX era with the two blade version being rare within that period.

The knife in question is a large Copperhead.
The blade configuration causes it to be known as a Copperhead Trapper. The reason for that is your knife has the spey blade as the secondary blade. That is the usual blade configuration for a standard trapper, a primary clip blade and a secondary spey blade.
Most Copperheads have a clip blade and a skinner blade.(Not a spey blade as the secondary)
The frame shape is that of a Copperhead, however it appears that this knife frame may be a bit longer than the standard sized Copperhead. (Hard to tell size in the picture shown)

The numbers Bighead gave are correct for a standard Case Trapper, but that is not what your knife is. (In fairness, he posted those numbers before seeing a picture.)

The handles are smooth grey bone as you had been told previously.
I suspect that your knife is part of a SFO (special factory order) and not part of the standard
Case line and therefore more difficult to get info on.

Hope this helps to clear up any confusion you may have. ::shrug::

different knife phill. the copperhead is a 249 pattern. the knife in question is 200 pattern. the copperhead name is taken from tha frame shape, not blade configuration.

I've done a little more digging and here's what I came up with:

Fourteenth Eddition Official Price Guide to Collector Knives
by C. Houston Price

page 188

There is a sketch of what appears to me to be the same pattern knife with the clip and spey blade combination. The cut line beneath the sketch says " 3 15/16" Jumbo Jack"

Below that appears the following information

3 15/16 Jumbo Jack
3200 Tested Prior 1940 Yellow Composition
5200 Tested Prior 1940 Genuine Stag
6200 Tested Prior 1940 Green Bone
9200 Tested Prior 1940 Imitation Pearl

There are prices for each of these knives based on mint price, but since the knife in question here is a much newer rendition, I did not think pricing was pertinent.

What this shows me is that this is not a new pattern. The 200 pattern number was used back then as well.
If I knew how to work the kids scanner, I would have simply posted the page, but I don't!!

I also found a 6249 in one of the AAPK stores which has the same blade configuration as the knife at the top of this thread. A link is provided below. Please note that it is part of a "TRAPPER SET".

http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/aap ... ore_id=788

Can anyone tell me the closed measurement of the 249 Copperhead?
