Grandaddy's old Ulster boy scout knife,

My grandfather who was born in 1910, had this old knife for years, used it hard, and it served him well.
At his death in 1991, I got to pick somethings I wanted
So I asked for and recieved this old pocket knife, and a couple of his other keepsakes.

Having just joined this forum I remembered the old knife and wondered if anyone might be able to date the blade marking, its

Morning there Ky. Wonder . Nice Ulster,especially so as it was grand dads . Does the knife have brass or steel liners ? And if you could get a clean shot of the tang stamp would help . A little mineral oil or WD 40 would clean up the rust some and not harm anything .

Great to have a treasure like that from your grandfather! Guesstimating the age of many old knives is difficult. Tang stamps are most often used but many companies did not change the basic format or fonts for years, or sometimes decades. And some used multiple different stamps simultaneously, on different patterns. Old catalogs are helpful but they also weren’t published every year.

There is a thread here containing tang stamp info for various companies, including Ulster, that have been contributed by AAPK members. Here’s a link to a post about Ulster, however I don’t see the exact stamp from your knife. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=39799&p=387240&hilit=Ulster#p387240. I suspect the best you’ll be able to determine is it’s pre-WWII.

Thanks everyone, found a site called scout knifes.net
They had a great demonstration of the early ulster scouts, from that site, it appears grandaddy old knive was built under their first BSA contract, between 1923-1926

The early versions had a one piece can opener , yours is the 3 piece type so it was made 1930s to about 1941

Good eye, Mike. I hadn’t noticed the OP knife appears to be missing the opener stud, but the rivet is still there. A good example of using a trait other than tang stamps to help determine a knife’s age. Should have paid closer attention.
