camillus #72

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Great job Smitty! You got that one looking good again. Real good in fact.

I found another one this afternoon. It’s the scout model but it is in tremendous shape. I had to give $20 for this one but it’s really nice.

Well; maybe I should head back over there. The guy had another one just like it for the same money. I couldn’t tell which was best so I finally just picked one. They were identical.

I appreciate the response guys and I am hoping to learn about the meaning of the 1047 versus 72 that Skip mentioned. I did notice this knife only seems to have a pin through the backsprings and no where else. No markings on this one other the the long line tang stamp. All caps, not in italics so I think 60’s or 70’s ??

Thanks again guys. I am enjoying looking for these. I really want a black handled one, regular 72 with regular shield. I have a couple of 40 patterns with that black and I think it really looks nice. Happy hunting!!

Morning Sir, if you can get another one for that price, would grab it. If you don’t want it they make great trading pieces .As for the clones vs actual 72 s ,there’s a list somewhere in the clone or 72 thread . If you can’t find it do have a updated list can send you.The 1047 and 72 are different. You won’t see pins in the handle other than center spring pin on the newer pieces.
When you say black handles ,do you want bone, composite or delrin . May know where there’s a couple of long line 72 s w/ bone ,but they’re a little more than 20 bucks .
Glad to see someone else here in the 72 world . Enjoy ,good luck in your hunt ::tu::

For $20 you better rush your rear-end over there and grab that one before someone else stumbles on to it. If you don't want to keep two, I'll be willing to take it off your hands for a slight profit.

The 1047 is the Scout version of the 72. the differences are the shield and the 1047 doesn't have a pattern number stamped on the obverse side of the main blade. The obverse side of the main blade tang is blank.

As to the single pin, Camillus stopped pining the handles on in the mid '70s and started using a large plastic stud on the back of the handle that sticks through the side plate as seen in the picture below. They used it on both 72's and 1047's (plus other patterns but I've never really paid any attention to them). I call it "post construction" but that's just me.

Thanks Ripster and Jerryd for helping to educate me on these knives. Thanks to Skip for encouraging me to find more and giving me info on where to post pictures and learn even more.

You guys are a wealth of information and I truly appreciate getting to hang out with you.

The place where I found that knife is about an hour and 20 minutes away so I am not going to make a special trip but i may be close by in a couple of weeks...so if it’s still there...I’ll bring it back to the orphanage.

Awesome find and a Great Deal at $20. Like others have said, if you can get another at that price you should. Especially if it's in as great of shape as the one you got. Welcome to the Camillus 72 & 72 Clone Addiction family. ::tu:: When you get a chance, be sure to read through the Camillus 72 Clone thread. Lots of great info and a good reference of all the different variations out there. ::tu:: ::tu::

I received this one the other day. But just got around to cleaning it today. It is a Camillus Long Line Tang Stamp 72 in a dark brown stagged handles. You'll have to excuse the photos, but no sun today so it was really hard to get the true color of the handles. They look almost black in the photo's, but I have one under bright lights that you can see the brown tone of the handles. This one needed some good cleaning. I soaked it in warm mineral oil for two days, exercising the blades and brushing with a nylon brush. Today I flushed it with WD-40 and did the usual, pencil, eraser, and 0000 steel wool to finish cleaning it. Now it has great snap, and looks way better than it did. The main reasons for getting this???? I'm a glutton for punishment & love a good challenge. I love 72's, and this is the darkest brown handles I've seen. Here are some photos.

Picked us this little enigmatic 72 the other day. The tang stamp is what first caught my eye, it is the 4 line 1930 to mid 1940 on one side and sword brand on the other.
DSCN6908.JPG
DSCN6909.JPG
The handles are the old brittle milk plastic type pre WW 2 but there are no handle pins. Camillus quit pinning their handles in 1976 or so.
DSCN6904.JPG
DSCN6905.JPG
One liner and the center liner are coined but not the other liner.
DSCN6912.JPG
I am glad I got it in spite of the incongruities. Obviously worked on but I still wonder about the 4 line stamp on the main blade which would be pre 1946.
