Pal jack knife question...

Post by Gone2Three »

Acquired this knife recently and buyer hasn't shipped as of yet. The pictures posted are the one's the seller provided. So my question is what type of blade do I have here as the primary, or what exactly is this knife called? Thanks for any information! Randy

Sheepsfoot jack? ::shrug::
Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!

Most likely so ::hmm:: being an amateur and such thought it might have been blade swapped....
I've seen other Pal jack's before but nothing with this particular blade.
Were these made by Pal or outsourced by another knife maker?
Thanks for your reply redrider ::handshake::

I Know nothing about this particular knife, but Sheepsfoot Blades were extremely popular and numerous last century up to the fifties. They were commonly known as Farmers knifes, carried by many farmers both here and in England. Similarly as Cattle/Stockman knives were carried by stockman and ranchers in America. This blade shape has always been very popular in the horticultural industry.
Really nice looking knife by the way. ::nod:: ::nod:: ::nod:: ::tu::

Cool knife. Reminds me of a Case 6217 Loom Fixer.
I always thought that a sheepsfoot was popular with folks that wanted a strong blade with a reduced chance of snapping a tip. Like a loom fixer.
As a kid I was told by my father to never sharpen the sheepsfoot blade on my stockman because you could open oil cans and strip wire with less worry about breaking the blade tip or nicking the edge.

My first thought was how similar it is to a LoomFixer. Beautiful knife.

I found several examples of farmers knives while researching this one that had a sheepsfoot blade, but the smaller blade was on the opposite end, but not like the sellers knife... so this is why I came here to ask.
So much to learn... :)

Thanks for the compliment. When I carry a largish belt knife I find the LoomFixrer to compliment it well. Here is the “official” LoomFixer thread.

PAL made great knives, yours is beautiful. I hope it sees some time in your pocket.

My theory is that these big sheepsfoot blades were popular with tradesmen and that they have been replaced by Stanley type utility knives.

"Loomfixers" are typically bareheaded and a swayback type of frame (see eveled's examples).
And rather large. What's the closed length on the Pal ??

Thank you both for the compliments on the knife ::handshake:: , yes, that old bone is what caught my eye ::drool::
The seller said it measures about 3 3/8 inches , won't ship out until after the holiday on Monday.
She's sent me a couple more pictures of the main blade

Thought I'd post a few pictures of the knife now that I've had time to give it a little clean up. Overall, I'm pleased with my purchase ::tu::
A small bonus was finding out that it has half stops, which wasn't disclosed originally ::super_happy::

That should make a good user. Looks like the main blade has been tip damaged and ground down.
