Any Train Enthusiasts Out There?

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

A few more pictures of the C&O 1309, back in the day and in action. I can't wait to see this loco in person. ::ds::

I don't blame you, they were beasts weren't they. 8) 8) 8) And i don't think most people realize the speeds that steam trains could reach, depending on the individual loco they could comfortably cruise along at between 60-80 MPH. ::tu::

I read somewhere recently that the Streamline steams broke the 100 mph barrier on their routes. Just imagine all that tonnage traveling over 100 mph, and over 70 years ago! It just amazes me they stay on the tracks . . . well, more often than not.

100 MPH was quite achievable given the right conditions, but to cruise at 60 MPH given their age is astonishing, considering that was the normal running speed for the EMD's when they were built. Really liking your posts. Have a good and safe weekend. ::tu:: ::handshake::

This is one of our old work horse steam engines, used for spur passenger lines and a lot of goods work. K160- built in 1940 and is currently being used on a tourist passenger line in our Central Goldfields tourist area. Restored and maintained by volunteers.

Cool, cudgee, and an interesting little red caboose being pushed too. Ours were shaped a little differently. Rounded up a few caboose pictures I've found along the way. Behind the steam engine is a caboose and another sitting on a side rail on the left.

Really good ones, John, love that classy look of the Chessie! I really miss the days of cabooses, and the days when freight cars had names and slogans, rather than the current generic look with a few initials.

A 1967 maintenance schedule for Caboose/Guards Vans issued by the Victorian Railways.
Notice that they are to be hand painted, this would have been carried out at the VR Newport Work shops, probably by apprentices. The Victorian Railways back then employed may boys straight from school as apprentices in many trades. They had a yearly intake and you had to sit an entrance exam. ::tu:: :)

Well yes John..., we do have some trains over here. ::nod:: There aren't many in my area, as I live in the deep "country". But I could look on the internet if I can find some pictures. ::tu::

OK so I did some home work and here it is.

First picture is a horse train from 1894.

Next pictures are from my area. ::tu:: Looking at the 3rd picture, I live between Gemünden & Bad Kissingen in the Hammelburg area.

If you enlarge the last picture you can read Bad Kissingen inside the train. That is the name of the county, if you will, where we live. ::nod::
