What do you guys think about cab-forward steam engines? I wonder how the coal gets into the firebox? Looks like a big 2-8-8-4 backwards. Another recent Twitter post.

That is an interesting picture, don't remember seeing one either, but I forget a lot these days. I read that even though the cab is moved forward, the fireman is still at the rear.

Thanks for the comments on the photo, guys. I had driven by that mill earlier in the daylight and regretted not taking a picture, The night shot turned out alright, I just wish the light snow that was falling at the time would have shown up in it.

David, I had to look up Cimarron Valley. Thanks for showing that, it is good to see the different regional short lines, nice looking loco.

One of our old Victorian Railways B Class bulldog nose EMD's that has been bought and refurbished in the colors of the new owners. These old locos are up to 60 years old, and considering the miles they have done, are just amazing. I can see now why these loco's started my interest in trains.

The oldest loco, I've ever seen on are lines up here, is an old emd switcher at P&H. The second oldest was a GP45 that CN refurbed.

Good picture Since your first posts to this thread, I have been reading up on Australian railroads. I was looking at bulldog nose pictures and reading up on SSR tonight, but got sidetracked on grain and coal trains. The picture below is quite a scene, do you live anywhere near the coal fields or where you would see those looong grain trains? I have spent a lot of time in my life, sitting at a crossing, while watching a long coal train pass, but have probably never seen a grain train as long as some in parts of Australia.

Brenda and I do a 4 mile loop each weekend day and on holidays when we don't go out of town. These are some pictures of Norfolk Southern in action. Occasionally we have an AMTRAK sighting too.

Walking, Ike, and there's a Dunkin a little after Mile 1 so we call it the coffee walk. Our best time is around 1 hr. 10 mins. The train tracks are just on the other side of the stream/levy at the bottom.

Thanks, just love this thread and want to keep it going. I do not live near any of these long grain trains, but close to long rolled steel trains, the longest i have had to wait for a train to go through a railway crossing is 15 minutes, which is a long time. There are long grain trains in the state where i live, and as we type they are extremely busy as we have had a bumper wheat crop. A lot of the old loco's are pulled out of storage, and serviced to keep up with demand, lucky these multi-national companies did not scrap them all. In the photo that i posted, if you look carefully you can see there are 4-5 locos pulling the rake. Here is one of the main rural grain silos in the state where i live.

Lousy weather, partially obstructed view, but managed a quick shot of a BNSF coal train that was movin' on.....
