25OT with Python Skin Pattern Micarta Handles

I installed a couple of new blades and some python skin pattern micarta handles on this one.
It's a little different but does look alot like snake skin (I've never owned a python so I cant say if its a match for python skin or not).

Very, Very nice Jeff. I need some more practice to make one look that good.
I just got some Black linen Micarta that I'm going to use on a liner lock knife kit. Got any tricks or cautions for me about working with Mircarta?

I just got some Black linen Micarta that I'm going to use on a liner lock knife kit. Got any tricks or cautions for me about working with Mircarta?

Wear a respirator for sure.
I sand mine at 220 grit, 400 grit and 600 grit before taking them to the polishing wheel. Occasionally I take the sanding to 800 grit, it depends on how the Micarta looks when sanded.
For polishing compounds I like to use Black Magic (it’s my “go to” compound). I’ve also used Pink no scratch compound and just today I worked with some white polishing compound on some Micarta that worked quite well.
Black Micarta is a good one to start with as it doesn’t show any compound color stains when buffing.
Micarta is a great stable product. I just finished some kitchen knife handles in black Micarta for my sister in law on some very inexpensive Chinese knives (they have some sentimental value to her). It was my first go round with corny bolts and kitchen knives but the turned out pretty good.

Great job Jeff, and thank you for the information. It just so happens that I was at the hardware store today and picked up a respirator. I had seen a couple of guys on some YouTube videos working with Micarta and wearing a respirator. I'll post some pic's when I'm done.

Funny this post popped up.. Friday at work I was sharpening some of my co-worker"s knives at my desk. I was using my Work Sharp belt sharpener. I have a small fan on my desk that is always on (low) that points right at me. Later Friday night, I was brushing my teeth and got a quick coughing fit for no reason. I coughed up black phlegm that I realized was from inhaling all of that metallic dust and probably whatever was wearing off of the sanding belts I was using. I won't make that mistake again. Good information and a reminder, guys ..

I agree, wear a respirator when sanding/cutting micarta.
Don't even think about cutting or working G-10 without using a respirator!! As I understand G-10, it's essentially micarta made from fiberglass. Resin & paper or linen dust in your lungs is not good, resin and glass particles can do major damage!

When I put a polished finish on paper micarta, I usually sand to 2500 to 4000 before polishing.
If it is black micarta I will use Black Magic compound then No Scratch Pink. For white or light colored paper micarta I skip the Black Magic because it can be really difficult to remove the residue from light colored micarta.

For linen micarta I usually skip polishing in favor of a better grip.

That's my method worked out by trial & error. Not saying it is the best method, just mine. Other methods may work better for other folks.
