Ode To The 07

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

I've noticed that some are too dark for my taste but you have chosen well grasshopper. That's a big ::tu:: for both of them.

Those are so nice I couldn't control myself so I have one that just hit town this morning and should find it's way into my mailbox later today. I'm hoping it's the same one that was pictured in the auction. ::fc::

And the one I bought came today. I'm pleased with the mark side. Pile side is just a skoosh dark but not terrible. Spey blade has about 1/8" of rock in the half-stop position. Disappointing but not worth the trouble to send it back.

jerryd, I've looked at a bunch of the 2020 Ltd Ed Autumn SC Bone 6207s and it seems that the vast majority of the pile sides are much darker than the mark sides. I wonder why that is? (I've seen some that look almost totally black.) Yours looks pretty good to me. I'll admit, I was a little disappointed with my first one when it arrived because I was expecting it to be mostly orange like the one in the stock photo at SMKW. But, now that I've had it for awhile, it has really grown on me (as most knives have a tendency to do once I have them in hand). The 1/8" of ½stop play seems like a lot; but, personally I wouldn't worry too much about it; obviously, it would be more concerning if it had play in the fully open position. As a general rule for my own collection, I want all my knives to be in the best condition possible...especially a brand new knife...so I completely understand the disappointment you may feel. ::nod::

Measured it again with a better ruler and it's actually 3/16". Very disappointing for one that was highly anticipated and the first one ever to have this flaw. If the handles were not such a crap shoot with this knife I would send it back to the seller for a replacement but the handles were why I bought it in the first place. Maybe I should contact Case and see if there's anything they can do about it. After all, in the end, it is their responsibility. The knife should never have passed QC.

As many of you well know, I have an unquenchable thirst and insatiable hunger for 107Ws...even 107Ws I already have (or have multiples of). So, when I saw these two 6107Ws from the 2010 Case Historian Tour on eBay with an OBO option, naturally I jumped right on them without hesitation even though I knew I already had one.

My first offer was accepted; I bought them and then I just kind of put them out of my mind while waiting for them to arrive.

When they finally arrived I was pleasantly surprised to discover that, although at first glance they appeared to be identical (I never really looked them over that closely before submitting my offer and making the purchase), it turns out they are each different...and even different from the one I already had. I had no idea that there were three (possibly even more) versions of this particular knife. So, while I thought I was buying two duplicates of a knife I already had, I was in fact getting two completely different (previously unknown) versions. Needless to say, I am very happy. :D

It came today. Fast service by the seller and the USPS. It's a 2020 Case 6207 Mini-Trapper with Fire In The Box Corelon handles. I've been looking at them for several months and I'm thrilled with it.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe that is what Case called "Pretty Bone"...a curious name, IMHO, because many of the examples I have seen are a lot like yours: mostly dark (black or brown) on one side, sometimes showing lighter highlights near the bolsters and/or along the edges; and a more colorful/variegated/splotchy color on the other side.

Here are a few of mine from the same era for comparison:

Very nice Ridgegrass. I've got a couple from that era that have the same bone. Some have some really subtle variations, then others almost fade to a natural bone on one end.

Well, my friends...it appears OCD Mini-T Monkey has finally "jumped the Mini-T shark"

Yeah...I know I said that the 3-blade 6307W was too thick (and I still think it is), but I had no idea what "thick" really was until I got this 5-blade "Baby Beast"...a knife I was pretty sure I didn't want precisely because of its thickness.

But, in a moment of weakness, I put in the minimum opening bid ($129.00) and ended up winning the auction (I was the only bidder)...which, to be honest, totally surprised me :o because I was not expecting to win at all since it's common to see _507s sell for north of $200.00, especially stag.

Other than the thickness (a whopping ¾" at the thickest point of the stag handle scale...which is "SAK thick" IMO), I have only two complaints with the 'Baby Beast' 5507: there's no Wharncliffe blade (apparently the MOP 8507 is the only _507 model deemed worthy enough to warrant a Wharncliffe blade), and the very weak snap on all but the master clip and spey blades (which are also the only blades that have half-stops). There's almost no closing snap at all...the blades must be pushed back into the blade channel to fully close. ::disgust::

This will probably be the last Case Mini Trapper I buy (at least until Case releases another 07W), so it's only fitting that it's Stag; one of my top two favorite handle materials (along with ivory, of course). :)
