They think that one reason The 611 survived is that it was derailed in the mid-50’s and underwent an extensive rebuild. The other thirteen J Class engines did not and by the late 50’s or early 60’s had been taken out of service and scrapped.

That and the persistence of a group of people at Norfolk and Western to create a public relations centered steam excursion program.

If you ever see an opportunity to take such a trip, do so.

Carry goggles. Those coal cinders really hurt one’s eyes.

In my last picture above, that Auto train is over 2 miles long. It just doesn't seem possible that all of that can stay on the tracks without derailing. And there's a Trailer jet right next to it on the Westbound rails.

We were out West in 2001 and driving on I-40 in Nevada running parallel to old US-66 and there was a train track that had the longest train I have ever seen, although it was probably just the usual two-hundred or so cars. The thing was, given that we were in the desert, we could see it in its entirety, from one end to the other. We were going in the same direction, so we got to watch it for a long while.

Cool plow! On RFD Network there's a train show from 5:30-6:30 PM EST Mondays. They had an old black & white video segment of one of those getting flipped over a pile of drifted snow and ice somewhere. They interviewed one of the guys who was riding inside the plow car, he and another worker survived without any major injuries but had a wild ride.

Some pictures taken last Winter at the WMSR Station in downtown Cumberland. They have been using this diesel painted in period correct color scheme after retiring steam-engine 734 and while restoring steam-engine 1309.

Good guess, Willy Nilly, the 1472 and 678 are GP40s. The 4036 is an SD70. I looked them all up, wasn't sure off the top of my head.

I need to work on my diesel recognition, very subtle differences if you ask me. I can usually id E's and F's along with GP40's, then I'm hitting the books.
