Sorry to learn that about Baxter. We all miss our canine buddies for sure.

It’s 37 degrees F here and been raining since sometime middle of last night. The dogs and cats are keeping each other warm! ::tu:: :D

So sorry to hear about Baxter. It's tough losing an old friend like that.

Ken--I I love this picture!😁.. Layla loves MOST cats also.. except for my uncle's old Tom cat.. he swatted her in the nose once about 4 years ago and if she even sees him in the yard she runs for the garage and shakes like a leaf on a tree!😂 If you just say his name she looks out the garage door for him!😁😂 She's such a big baby sometimes..yet she'll rip into a dog three times her size if she feels threatened ::shrug::

Great pictures! Mike, your fence looks just like mine. Ike I’m always amazed by Labs and their total lack of concern about cold and wet. They’re up for a swim no matter the temperature and seem not to care a bit about rain whether it’s cold or not. I guess they just are bred for it. ::shrug::

Thanks Steve. They are interesting dogs. Very chill, very observant, and very independent. Great with kids and family. And also very protective and intimidating if they perceive a threat. She is the strongest dog we have ever had. Supposedly they have the highest bite force in the canine world - but Ahter has never bit anyone. (Well, she did shake the snot out of a couple of possums before my wife could drag her off.) They also shed hair like no dog I have ever seen before. It literally rains off of them, 365 days a year.

So info me on the name "Ahter".
I like any name for a dog that is difficult to shorten or doesn't end in "y".
Our sheltie (many years ago) was named Rio.

The wife and daughter named her that. It's supposed to mean "shooting star" or "lucky star" in Turkish.

But don't ask me - for some reason, my name suggestions don't seem to merit much consideration from the naming committee.

Our current dog's name is Pepper. I was over-ridden, again, by my mother, sisters and nieces.

The best names for dogs are supposed to be short, 1 or 2 syllables max, and should NOT be confusable with other pets' names or with commands. Ideally, they should be "hard" names not "soft" names.

Example - while it might seem cute to name a dog acquired around the holidays "Noel" or "Snowflake" or "Snowball", these names sound too much like the command "NO". A name should only be associated with good stuff.

Why 1 or 2 syllables? Take the command "STOP" for example. If you need your dog to stop whatever it is they are doing RIGHT NOW, generally one must get the dog's attention with the name and then the command - running toward a street filled with traffic or other dangerous situations. Much easier to yell "Pepper - STOP" than "Superecalifragilistic - STOP".

Dogs also don't seem to be enamored with sylibant names - those with a soft sound - Sugar, Sissy, Sybil - don't work well. Dogs tend to ignore softer sounds. I know this for a fact with at least 1 dog - my last blue heeler. In that one, I was also ignored and she was named Sugar. Yeah, kinda sweet for a dog with a really sweet dispostion, but yelling "Sugar" outdoors doesn't travel well and she would ignore a lot of commands. Which is why I went to whistle commands with her and always carried (and still do) a whistle.

Oh, and some of the names I keep getting over-ridden on - good old knife related names - Kabar, Catt/Katt (for Cattaraugus), Colly (Collins), and Krypto (big Superman comic fan when I was young), Kaiser (good German name).

I know that many would consider "Katt" to not be a logical name for a dog, but as my 32 year old niece said 20 years ago -

"Uncle Wayne, your sense of humor is so warped it makes a pretzel look straight."

I remember as a Boy Scout, one of the Scout Masters brought his German Shephard to the summer jamboree.
The dog's name was Dee O Gee (D-O-G spells dog).

Try reasoning with an eleven year old granddaughter. She named the momma cat that adopted us “Pablo”. ::shrug:: It stuck, her name is Pablo. Not that it makes any difference with cats. ::dang::

In "Big Jake" when John Wayne looks over and says "Dog!" and the dog attacks the bad guy.
