Tiffany Skinning Knife

I was able to find this Tiffany Skinning Knife with a sharpening steel and really nice leather sheath. The stag is just fabulous. Below is a site that has what looks like a complete set for sale that has some history on the group. Mark Zalesky wrote and article about them in 2018, I think that was the year. I believe he still has his set but I'm not sure. I am very happy to have gotten this little group.

Mike...that is one very nice set up. I'm assuming that; because it has a Tiffany stamp, it's quite a collector's piece. That style of skinner would do quick work on getting a hide off...long smooth strokes.

Yes it sure is a collector piece, they are very hard to find. I know of a complete set and another single skinner. Check out the link I provided in the first post.

Cool find Mike!! I am sure your steel is not the one from the big kit or from Tiffany but your set is still very nice. The sheath isn't marked Tiffany so it was probably saddlery shop made as were most earlier custom sheaths. In Mark's article in the May 2018 issue of Knife Magazine he states he knows of four complete hunter/butchering sets and one incomplete set and a "few" individual knives which all seem to be the smaller skinner like yours and mine. This article did not include my skinner in the count and I know of another full set that I don't think he is aware of. Definitely rare items. So if his "few" is three, yours and mine make five individual skinners known. Probably more sets and individual knives waiting to come to light but they are certainly very rare knives. Congrats on another great find!!

By the way, that shield on your knife is sterling silver and a light touch of silver cleaner will make it really stand out.

Gorgeous knife! Is the second item a steel?

Tiffany is known for stuff I personally don't care about, but that set is awesome! Eventually, I think once I get my skills enough putting some pieces of maple, oak, hickory, and chestnut (actually borrowed from the firewood) on some Russell Green Rivers (found some Dadley blanks for $8; marked down due to "slight rust"), I may make a stag skinner.

Yes it's a sharpening steel that I believe has been cut done to fit the case.
