Its been a couple of months since I've had a Red-Bellied Woodpecker visit. I was pleased to see him drop in for some lunch.

Big Hairy , I like that! I couldn't tell you the last time I had a Hairy in my yard. I am a big fan of woodpeckers and have had 4 different in my yard today, and a 5th in the trees adjacent to my yard, but no Hairy. Thanks for posting.

I like the woodpeckers. I'm getting more downys and hairys this year than anything else, the red bellies are around some, and the flickers show now and again,, the other morning I was filling a feeder with black oil sunflower seed and heard this loud racket coming from the direction of my woods, I turn to look and here came a pileated flying along screeching his song with every beat of its wings, circled around the feeders an made a beeline back to the woods singing his song all the way, man are they ever loud.

Cool photos on this page. I always like Ibis and Woodpeckers. Red-bellies and Downys are the most common woodpecker in my garden.

Homer, I agree that the Pileated Woodpeckers call is loud. Have you ever noticed that the Flicker's call is very similar to the Pileated except with a higher frequency and pitch, and not as loud. And the Downy's is also similar to the Pileated, just a much higher frequency and pitch than the Pileated and not nearly as loud as the Flicker's.

That old redbellie can raise a racket too, if I'm around the pole that I hang my suet baskets on and they are ready to fed, they'll land on top of the pole and back down it fussing all the way.

Here is my bird humor pic......I put out $$$'s worth of feed, what do I get? Cardinals who would rather eat from the gutter. Evidently some type of seed has accumulated there.

On the subjects of feed and woodpeckers.......I bought a bag of this stuff recently. I hadn't been getting Flickers, other than an occasional quick visit. I started throwing out a little of this feed, and have had Flickers every day since. They are shy, so I put it out 50' or 60' from the house, I will shorten the distance over time in order to get better pictures. Also, I only put out a little at a time, just before sunup. That way the deer, skunks, etc, don't eat it all up. Pictured below are 2 Flickers, a Red Bellied and the Sapsucker paid another visit.

Supposed to have our first frost of this fall tonight if the weather guessers are right, and I saw the first Goldfinch of the season this afternoon at the birdbath, so maybe they are. Unfortunately when they migrate to us for the winter they’re not sporting the yellow/gold colors. Sorry, no picture - when I got my phone out to take a picture, it flew off. There will be more soon though.

Here are a couple more pics and then I am finished for a while. Right at dusk every night, Cardinals and White Throated Sparrows show up, not so much during the day.

Ike, what I have today: Cardinals, White-Crowned Sparrows, Red-Bellied Woodpecker, Dark-eyed Junco, the largest I have seen, Mourning Doves, and House Sparrows which are back in force.

Flew along beside me for the briefest of moments as I neared home ....

Cool photos, Ike. Our feeders are fairly active today. Mostly Chickadees, Titmice, House finches, Cardinals, and Blue jays.

I had a visit from a Brown Creeper just a little while ago, that is somewhat unusual. Even more unusual (for December around here), I had a couple of R W Blackbirds in the yard. I assumed there would be zero interest in photos of Blackbirds.

I am envious of that Brown Creeper, Ike! I have never seen one in my garden, even though we have live oaks for them to creep around on. With the cold front today there are lots of birds about!

There has also been good activity here the last 2 days. Regarding the Creeper, it picked around on some suet that I had jammed into a fork in the tree. So, maybe he will return. He ignored the suet in the wire cages.

Man alive Ike that's x10. Although they supposedly winter in my area I've never had the pleasure. I have the usual suspects though.

Do my eyes deceive me, or is that the fabled, Giant White Dove of Tennessee in the last photo? That is almost as good as finding an Ivory Billed! Good one!

So that's what that is, the boss do like her yard art. We both enjoy watching the birds, probably spend more than we should, but what the heck.
