Ode To The 07

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Yeah, nothing beats Abalone for stunning color since it seems to radiate every color of the visible light spectrum (and possibly even some wavelengths visible only to certain deep sea creatures).

And speaking of color...OOPS! In my excitement to show off the Abalone 07, I got a bit ahead of myself on the timeline and accidentally skipped over these colorful Mini-Ts from the early 2000s which deserve a showing since, after all, they are 07Ws (and the Diamond Shield 07Ws are la crème de la crème).

Thanks Tom, Ivoryman, Floyd, John & jerryd...appreciate the comments and feedback (not to mention the Monkey loves an audience because he's such an incorrigible little show-off).

Well, we're heading into the final leg, the home stretch on the Mini Trapper timeline, but the 2010-2019 decade still holds a few little gems eager for a moment in the spotlight, a stroll down the catwalk and a twirl around the dancefloor, so let's get to 'em.

MTTP: Corporate Sponsorship - 2010-2019

Diversification is the name of the corporate game and in this decade Case took the sponsorship ball and ran with it slapping the names and logos of various companies on handles, blades and shields like a NASCAR sales rep run amok. Carhartt, Ducks Unlimited, John Deere, Harley-Davidson and Tractor Supply are some of the corporations that graced the 07 with their sponsorship during this decade.

I remember your John Deere replacement shield post, jerryd. In fact, seeing yours is what inspired me to get one just like it. (So far the shield in mine hasn't fallen out...yet!)

I can't match your 9207 Sapphire Glow Corelon, but here's another one that I got after seeing yours. So, thank you again. (You really are a bad influence, jerryd...and I mean that in the best possible way ::nod:: )

* The 6.5 in the pattern number is actually a combination of 6 (bone) and 5 (stag) because the bone has been jigged and dyed to resemble stag.

Congratulations, jerryd, there's nothing like the feeling of completing a "complete set" of knives even if it's just a relatively small subset of a larger collection (or accumulation as the case may be). OCD Monkey feels intense and immense vicarious pride and satisfaction at your achievement (which, by the way, confirms and validates OCD Monkey's existential pursuit of universal order...so thank you for that, as well). It would've really met strict 'military specs' if the Army 07 had put on it's "Dress Blues" like the other three branches, though. (Sorry, Monkey...even in "order" there must exist a certain degree of "disorder"...otherwise each would cease to exist! :? ) :D

MTTP: Futurus Materialis - 2017

Fortunately Corelon & Kirinite are not my personal Kryptonite...because there's an endless variety of both handle materials to be had; enough to bankrupt (or worse) the hapless indiscriminate 07 collector. Nevertheless, I must admit that even as much as I tend to dislike and avoid synthetic knife handles in general (bad experiences with celluloid mostly...but that's a long story for another thread), Case has put out some really stunning handles using these futuristic-sounding materials. So far I've been pretty successful at resisting the pretty, new, shiny objects, i.e., not falling into "OCD Mini-T Monkey" mode, but there are a couple that even I could not resist.

Here are my only two with these handle materials:
2017 9207 Aquarius Corelon, and 2017 10207 Silver Stardust Kirinite
PB240002.JPG
Like with Abalone, a slight change in the lighting can really change the optics of these synthetic handle covers, illuminating different aspects.

As my dad would have said, "Get thee behind me Satan". I was sore tempted by that Silver Stardust Kirinite (and several others) but managed to talk myself out of it (them). I'm sure it just jumps out at you in person. As for the Corelon, there are a couple I just couldn't resist.

The problem with Corelon is they're all different. If the seller posts a stock picture the end product is a mystery until you get it and the back will be very different from the front.

So true...and the same can be said for stock photos of knives with stag handles as well. You roll the dice and pray you like the knife you receive.

MTTP: 2017-2019

With so many handle variations becoming available it would seem only logical to add some new pattern numbers to identify the new materials being incorporated. That did happen with Corelon, which was assigned the number "9", and Kirinite, "10". But, one thing I always found somewhat perplexing is the use of "6" to denote both bone as well as some synthetic material...especially since "3" and "4" are also used for synthetics. I mean, what's the point, really, of having the exact same number assigned to multiple handle materials of vastly differing characteristics especially when there are already other numbers being used for a particular material? :? (Even more perplexing is how OCD Monkey manages to maintain any semblance of sanity in the midst of such a random and chaotic numbering system. ::cb:: )

Here's an example of two 07s with different handle materials (one natural, one synthetic) but with the same handle material identifier ("6") in the pattern number.

PB240026.JPG
PB240024.JPG
PB240022.JPG

And here's another Mini Trapper of the same color but with different jigging, shield and blade configuration but the same pattern number (at least they added a "W" in the pattern number to denote the Wharncliffe secondary blade).
