How long do you keep your knives?

Post by Luckypaul777 »

How long have you kept; knives that you wanted; only to end up selling? Anyone have any knives; that they have had for 20 years or more? My collection constantly ends up; changing its makeup. I haven’t kept any more than a few years; even though later; I regret letting them go. :( I got back into the hobby this past December; and have acquired around 100 knives. Most of them have been sold and new one’s bought. I guess I am a fickle collector; ::shrug:: there are so many knives to choose from; I want them all; if only for a short while. ::ds:: I have never been a Packrat; my attic and garage are not jam pack with things from 30 years ago.

I really like what I have now; but see some knives on the AAPK stores; and eBay and still get that urge. ::dang::

Hey Paul,
I have one that I have had ever since I was a youngster. Ialso have one that is 29 years old that my grandfather gave me as a graduation gift in high school. It is a fight'n Rooster.

I sent one to Bladerunner a while back that I had kept for over 40 years.

I have only sold maybe 2 or 3 knives in the last 20 years. And I sold those for a penny each.

There are a few very special knives in my collection that are older than myself. Nothing fancy a few Schrade old timers, some Case knives. they belonged to my grandfather(s), and a most have been in my possession for 20 years (I'm only 26, so any longer is pushing it a bit ) ) A few I just got within the last 10 years, after they passed away (they were busy using em up till then ;) )

I am 53 years old. There are knives I've had in my collection for over 40 years. I have traded off and given away a few over the years, and I usually end up wishing I had them back. I went several years without adding many new knives to my collection, but I've been more active during the past four years or so. Once I quit smoking four years ago, I decided to take the money I'd been wasting on cigarettes and invest it in knives. Lots more fun and definately easier on the lungs.

Boy; you guys do hang on to them. I do have one that; I have had awhile from my father when he passed; 19 years ago. Even though it’s not an expensive knife (Boker); it’s not for sale at any price. I remember when I was young (1940’s); he mostly carried a Barlow; and used it quite often along with a Sunday knife. Most of the knives that I collect; are just for looking at. I don’t really have a need for one to use; don’t laugh  my EDC is a Victorinox Officier.

Grin..I swap and trade my knives as if they were trading cards...I may spend over a year working to aquire a certain knife and then sell it off within 6 months. I fall into Luckypaul's catagory where there are so many knives that I like I keep working to own them all in one form or another.

I am quite positive that I will one day purchase all my knives I previously owned before the way things are going...The honest truth is that I did not always have the funds to afford the knives I have always wanted and I have worked hard to work my way up the ladder to knife nirvana. :D

I have twenty five or thirty knives that are keepers, two that are special, old Boker Congress that my father gave me and a Boker Olde Stage that my mother gave me, but I sure like to trade on knives.

My oldest is a 64052 Case redbone with nickel liners that I bought new in 1973. Then I carried it for fifteen years. ::dang::

I'm afraid I'm in the same catagory as Sunburst. I do have several that i've had for at least 20 to 30 years. But the majority I sell or trade off.

I've bought, sold, traded, received and given away several thousand knives, so far. But some knives are just "special", and you can't get rid of them. That doesn't mean you can't use or carry 'em - but they'll always be with me.

When I was a kid, Momma would confiscate every knife she caught me with - the first knife I was allowed to keep (but not carry, unless Pop was with me), was/is a Remington RH-50 semi-skinner. It was given to me at age 9 - I'm 60 now - and I still have it. I like 'em all, but I keep the ones that are tied to memories.

One of my favorites, and one that I display proudly, is just the blade (with no handle), that was my grandmother's kitchen knife. There's no name, and it's horribly pitted and the tang has snapped, just about in half. Occasionally (rarely), I'll peel a potato with it, and think fondly of my "Granny".

My friends here on AAPK have surprised me with knives, more than once. I'm always happy to show 'em, but they're staying with me. Knives are inantimate tools, but the memories are still alive, so those are the ones I keep. Plus, I just LIKE a well-made knife - so I keep a few around, all the time.

That's just me,

I do trade & even sell knives, but I do tend to hang on to knives that have a history for me.

I have the first knife I bought, c. 1966, about 42 years ago. It is a cheapie, but I keep it.
I have a Camillus TL-29 issued to me in the Marine Corps in 1970 or 1971. Carried it with me in Nam. I have had it 36+ years.
I have knives that belonged to both of my Grandfathers. Both have been dead for well over 20 years. I have a knife that my grandfather made and carried with him when he cruised timber for the CCC during the Depression. He must have made the knife in the 1920s, though I have only acquired it from my Dad recently.
I have an Al Mar knife that Al himself gave me about 1985, so I have had it for about 23 years.

If a knife comes from a friend or family member it doesn’t get traded.
Like JR says, “some knives are just ‘special’". ::tu:: 8)

I have old knives that have memories of lost loved ones, and a Hand made Buster Warenski Folder that he gave me in 1994. (one like it on e-bay the other day for $5,600.00) I would not sell it for anything, or amount! I have over 400 older knives, and cannot seem to figure out how to part with them. Most are not real valuable, but they seem to look good in display cases. I guess it will be up to my family members how they get back into society!

I've given quite a few away and kept way too many. They'll probably go to my neice and nephew when I go. ::shrug::

I have my first Boy Scout knife from the late 60's and several Schrade hunting knives I purchase or received as a youngster back in the 70's. Some of these are now pushing 40 years of age. I will keep them for ever and in my will, I have left strict instructions to my kids to make sure they keep a few certain knives and pass them on down to there kids.

As for my collection, I stick to only one brand, Schrade. I research and shop for Schrades only. This keeps it as simple as it can be. I don't have time to research many different brands. But, In my collection I do have some Henckle, Queen, Case, Puma and a couple of others, because when I come across a good deal I will purchase brands other than schrade.

I sell the one's I don't like and keep the special one's. Most of my collection are knives that are hard to find. ::nod::
