Repairing a 3 inch Victorinox
I have a 3 inch, 3 blade, Victorinox knife that needs repair. One of the pins became loose and enlarged the hole. Now the hole is out of round. Does anyone out there know who might be able to repair this knife? It has great sentimental value. I would think that if the hole was welded and then filed and re-drilled, this would solve the problem. Unfortunately, I do not know how to weld.

Can you post a picture of the knife showing the damaged area? That might help you get a repair response.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

John & Ryan know a good welder here on the AAPK. I'll send them a Link to this post.

Re: Repairing a 3 inch Victorinox
Hi Bill. Welcome to AAPK! I assume you are talking about a pivot pin issue (a pin that goes through the blades). I have never heard of welding to fix this problem. And, if the bolsters are nickel silver, I'm not sure that material can be welded. In any event, welding may be a lot more effort than is necessary. Some pictures would help and if it is not a pivot pin, but a rocker pin ( in the middle, that goes through the spring or springs) or a scale pin, that would be a different issue. Anyway, assuming you are talking about a pivot pin, repinning is a simple fix. If the hole has become worn or out of round, I usually repin with the next larger size. I.e., if the worn pin is 5/64, I would repin with 3/32. Then, when you drill out the new hole, everything is usually back in round. I hope this helps. As others have said some pictures would be a great benefit.

Here are photos of the Victorinox I am trying to get repaired. If you know of anyone that might be able to tackle this, let me know. I tried sending it to Victorinox and they said they could not repair it. They were kind enough to send me a replacement knife but I really want to try to get this repaired as it has great sentimental value.

Re: Repairing a 3 inch Victorinox
Oops, please forget my previous reply. I was mistakenly assuming that you were talking about a conventional folding or "pocket" knife. I assume all the parts of this knife are stainless steel. If so, I think you are correct, the hole in that liner will probably have to be welded and then redrilled. From your picture, it looks like the pivot hole in the blade is OK. I am no welder, but I think you may have to find someone who can weld stainless steel. I might be wrong, but I think regular welding steel won't work with stainless. Sorry for the confusion. You might want to try Bill DeShivs. You can send him a PM or an email through AAPK. Here is a link to his website: http://www.billdeshivs.com/bd/ He does a lot of work on switchblades, so I'm guessing he might be able to handle your knife. Good luck!

Re: Repairing a 3 inch Victorinox
OK...I'm going to think cheaper alternative. I'm wondering...since the Victorinox has covers, that will cover up the "looks" of an out-of-round pin...if you simply replaced the pin and repeened it...would that restore function, without the expense of welding and the technical issues involved? I like Herb's suggestion of using a slightly larger pin, if it fits. Looks like those are brass pins and with peening...I'm thinking, that the pin would expand and the knife would function normally; although, it would appear out-of-round, with the covers off. Doesn't seem like you would have a lot to lose, by trying that first.

Couldn't you just cut a new replacement liner piece? That might be less difficult than getting it welded...

Genius! This is why I like to hang around these parts.

Agreed redrider. Plug the hole with a brass or NSL pin and redrill it. Welding doesn't sound like a good option to me.
