For reference here’s the OP that started the game.

Anybody up for a game? I think we may have done something like this before, but as I was going through some knives tonight, I found an interesting one.

So pretty simple, share a pic or pics of a knife, (I guess we can show the blades too, just not the stamp), then you have to guess the maker. The first person to get it right gets to share the next mystery knife. (Only one mystery knife at a time please)

For now, let's keep it to fairly well known makers, no one-offs or obscure makers. If the guesses aren't getting anywhere, then hints are cool.

I'll get things started with this one. It's a whittler pattern. It has a rimmed liner, with what looks like some kind of gum fuddy synthetic material inset. The main was a bit tipped and reshaped, so there's nothing special about the blade.

I'd like to keep the game fun and fairly simple. That being said, there are no hard and fast rules. If there are too many rules, then that's no fun. I think I started it with the intent of showing some different and unique knives, like the KK that I started with. That was an interesting pattern that I had not previously seen from KK. So it was also to be educational to novice collectors like myself, and help us learn more about what's out there that we might not always get to see.

I think that everyone that has posted knives so far has kept pretty much in the spirit of the game. I guess it doesn't always have to be about the maker, as sometimes you may not know the maker, especially if it's a contract knife. So in that case, tang stamps are cool as the identifying factor.

I appreciate those that have kept this going, and it would be nice if more members participated. There are no stupid guesses, just wrong answers!

Dang nab it, me ole foggy brain is much too gluey too play... You boys keep showing wonderful knives I never even knew existed, diabolical I say! Trying to get me collecting more knives.

Just to clarify, I wasn’t trying to throw cold water on the game, or anybody.

For a couple of years I’ve been trying without success to get a young friend to join AAPK, especially to get him to show his Case Trapper collection. He’s one of those lurkers who reads AAPK online but has never joined. Last night I was talking with him on the phone, and mentioned the mystery knife game. He said he saw it, but having to know the exact wording and lettering on a stamp was “too intimidating”. His words, not mine. He went on to say that’s why he didn’t join the forum. He thinks he doesn’t know enough to join.

Just trying to keep it fun and educational. And give folks a chance to show some knives from their pile!

I don't know. All blades marked is unusual for a USA knife. I have not seen many old Pal knives so maybe Ken is correct.

If the knife is true the interesting point is that the Punch's Patent No 00833146 is registered to Seymour L Alvord of the Empire Knife Co

Have you ever matched it with another Ulster with the same 'blades' to see if size/shape is an exact match ? And does careful examination of all tang stampings compare exactly with other known Ulster ?
I have never seen an Ulster Knife Co 4 blade Utility with all blades marked or the "Scout" shield. You say the same for you.
It is a beautiful old knife and part of the enjoyment of knife collecting is trying to explain an old knife that is different in some way. Some are fakes, but not all. The knife manufacturers sometimes did 'odd' assemblies. They were making knives for people to use, not closely inspect tang markings.
I would like to read what others think about this Ulster Knife Co. Utility.

FWIW as I was studying the pictures the thoughts in my mind were, in order:

Is that Rogers Bone?
Looks like an Empire punch (surely that can’t be right).
Could it be an Ulster Dwight Devine? (No those weren’t marked on all blades).
Looks a little like Remington bone but that’s not a Remington punch.
Ok maybe it’s a Pal.

So I guessed Pal knowing it was probably wrong, but it was time to “fish or cut bait”.

I guess I was wrong on all counts except the Empire punch. If I’d guessed Empire it still would have been wrong.

That’s definitely an early one David to have all the blades stamped , I have several ulster scouts with all the blades stamped .
Would be a good topic for another thread .
