Bog Oak......
Interesting!
Is that why it is black or is that a synthetic stain?
.
Nice work!
I like the look!

Yes, I believe the "stuff" in the bogs really penetrates into the oak over time. No stain needed.

Nice work Glenn. Are you getting some use out of your new grinder?
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Re: Bog Oak
Just staring at it sitting there for now. I do still have to shake it out, make some adjustments on the tool arms that I built, and still have a tool rest to build for it. I am anxious to do something with it though!

Another handle material that I hadn’t heard of. Very nice looking material and a great job on the knife!

Re: Bog Oak
Nice work, I don’t have a traditional slipjoint in big oak and was thinking about doing a recover on a Barlow because I like the way my Mnandi looks. I’m still undecided on the scales to buy but those pics sure do look good.

Re: Bog Oak
Nice work Glenn! I believe it's the tannins and in the plants, especially those in the bog that causes the dark coloration, and I believe they also have a perseverating quality about them that keeps the water from Writing the wood.

Re: Bog Oak
Thanks! It is quite interesting stuff. While it has much of the open pores that we are used to in Oak, there are areas that are completely filled and buff out smooth. makes for an interesting look.
