Union scout knife opinions please

Post by ScoutKnives »

I have seen this knife before but never with the “Boy Scouts” shield , Also the shield isn’t inlaid into the bone .

Opinions welcome

Thanks , Mike

I don't know enough about Union to say right or wrong, BUT when I saw this knife the shield and especially the Font did not look right ::shrug::

I don't know much more than you do about Union, but I see a few things I would bit expect to find on a WW I era knife.

1- The sans-serif letters on the shield & on the tang stamp, especially on the tang stamp. Pre-1920 I would expect serif lettering.

2- Is the shield pinned on? I'm using my phone and can't get the pic large enough to see if there pins.

3- The shackle looks too big for that knife. It looks to me like it came from a later (and larger) TL-29.

4- The shield looks glued on and not inlaid.

Those are the things that stand out to me reading this on a cell phone. My opinion may change when I see it on a large monitor.

The knife looks good to me. Same shield was used on other Union/KA-BAR knives. All looks as I would expect it to. I recognize this seller as someone that lists good knives.

Good to know Wayne. I don't collect Union or Scout knives, so I am quite willing to accept your expertise. Thank you for posting. ::handshake::

Thanks for the confidence Dale. I've been wrong before and most every day come to think of it. ::handshake::

Yes the shield definitely matches my other unions I have Wayne , I was just concerned about the inlay of the shield .
Will see how high it goes , I will probably end up owning it !

Shields on many old knives are pinned on top of the bone. ::tu::

It does look like the shield is a little high but it also looks to be pinned and to have some routing of the bone. Hard to tell from the pics. Looks like a nice knife. Hope you can get it.
