Lee, that is one of the most beautiful Northfield Congress I have seen. And a whittler on top of that.
Nice crisp swedges and very nice long pulls as you described.
But that ivory and the curved pointed shield ....... just beautiful.

Congrats on many levels, and may I say the cleaning method to preserve the patina and reveal the etch is FABULOUS! Wow did you do a prime job and what a cool old knife. That's the secret, don't let it out, oldies are like a box of chocolates: sweet and you never know what you're going to get.

Thank you all for the nice comments I've mentioned before that this vintage knife collecting is funny, went years without landing a decent Northfield and end up with 2 in a month.

Iman, here is the selection of sandpaper I bought, I originally bought the paper to try to polish out sharpening scratches on blades that had no patina or etch but it seems to be too fine for that, just on a whim I was messing with a knife I wanted to get grime off of that 0000 steel wool was not touching and decided to try the paper on that, I was really surprised at how much of the grime came off into the paper and how much of the patina remained.

This Ulster was the first knife, it was really worn and dirty, bone was pocket worn and some edges on blade were worn before I started, there was no etch showing before I started, I was really surprised when an etch appeared.

Thanks, I appreciate your technique because I"ve been sanding down blades to 7000 myself for years, but didn't know you could preserve etch or patina. Do you start with 7000? I generally only use sandpaper for serious rust and corroded or degraded finish/flats. But when I do it, there isn't any patina left. Much less etch. And I don't use steel wool, find it scratches. The superfine 5000-7000 for me does the opposite, takes scratches out. Then I buff on a wheel. Maybe that's it too, the buffing. But great to hear what others do and get tips and pointers. I have restored many rusted shut, full of gunk, not working order etc and given them back to smiles and new life. Great to restore and re-use. Thanks for all the tips and the link. Good stuff. And the Ulster rocks, you nailed it. Did a fabulous job. Keep bringing them back to beauty. Love to see that stuff.

A friend gave me this little Northfield MOP pen that was her Dad's. Levine says Northfield closed in 1929 and was privately reopened by a man named Gill who hand made knives until around 1960. I'm not sure how to tell when this one was made. O'.
