Any info, C. Schlieper?

Post by Ben Ogle »

Does anyone have any info on this knife? It is marked C.SCHLIEPER SOLINGEN GERMANY.
Any info on age, or any thing concerning this knife would be greatly appreciated! When did the name eye brand come into place?

Sorry, I can’t help you with age dating of it but there are several members who are Eye Brand/Schlieper collectors. They may know.

That is a Schlieper "Fan Brand" knife. They were made for export but i am not sure to where; possibly South America or South East Asia where due to the influence of Dutch colonizers there was a demand for German cutlery.

First off, just because i have the handle EyeBrandMan don't mean I'm anywhere near an expert on them. I've just always liked them and there the first brand I got serious about collecting. Every time I'd use to go to the flea market the guy's there would say hey here comes Eyebrandman, because they new I would buy any good condition Eyebrand. Thats how I came up with the name.

Anyway your knife is an early one. Most likely late 50's thur 60's. The fan brand from my understanding was marketed to the Canadian and south African market. What I know about Eyebrand's is from literature I've been able to find, which is not much. There was a nice write up in knife world years ago. It's in a volume of Best of Knife Wold book which you can still find.

Thanks! That’s some valuable info, I’m glad to know it is an earlier one. Definitely earlier than I thought! Thanks for sharing.

Unfortunately that chart does not show the Fan Brand logo. It definitely was made for export but to which countries there are varying opinions.
Anthony Carter does state that beginning in 1880's Schlieper expanded its markets into South East Asia and that by 1930's some catalogues were printed in Dutch because the East Indies market had become so important. (pages 478-9).
This does not prove that Fan Brand logo was used for knives exported to South East Asia but it shows it to be a strong possibility.
