British Girl Guides Knife, M Mount and Son, Sheffield

Post by Nephilim »

Picked up an old UK Girl Guides knife, was hoping I could find more information about the date and manufacturer.

Carbon steel blade and spike, nickle silver handle scales. The tang stamp reads M. Mount and Son. I tried to find some information about the maker, but all that I know is that they were a Sheffield firm and they made of fixed blade scout/hunting knives around the 1940s. The Reg No. 494338 stamped onto the handle is not a unique individual serial number, but something that all M. Mount and Son Guides knives had. I've seen some older versions of this knife with can openers and corkscrews that I would guess are from the 1920s or 1930s based on the style of opener. My best guess is that this was made sometime from the 1930s-1950s. I can't find any items made by the manufacturer after that period, and I assume they went out of business. Also, most of the later Girl Guides knives were stainless steel and marked "Guide Knife" instead of "Girl Guides". I'm sending this one on to a friend of mine, but I'll probably add another to my collection eventually. Fits right in with my British military knives.

I have had a few of these metal handle British Girl Guides knives. Some have a cork screw. I think British Girl Guides were always up for a party.
