Help with A.G.R. Arkie oilstones
Folks, I have a pair of white and black A.G. Russell Arkansas oilstones that have never seen oil or water (NOS from AG) . Would it be OK to use water instead of oil ? Would there be any difference in the performance of the stones? Thank you for your time.

I would use water on them. It's cleaner than oil, works just as well, and well....cheaper. lol
Even old stones that have had oil used on them in the past I'll clean up with hot water and dish detergent and then use water on them for sharpening.

I use "Simple Green" cleaner in place of water or oil when I sharpen on Ark stones. It was recommended in an article by one of the custom knife makers, I want to say Wayne Goddard.

Have not tried Simple Green but I like the idea. The soap would improve viscosity - I’ll have to try it. I’ve used water on stones for years and can recommend it. “Spit” also works pretty good.

I too never heard of the simple green on whet rocks. But I like the idea. I know on razor hones it’s common to use some shaving soap lather. I bet the simple green works great!
