"I Do, I Do" Case's Sunday Nite $5

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

"I Do, I Do" Case's Sunday Nite $5

Post by kootenay joe »

"This remarkable slicer weighs less than 2 ounces. Its 9 1/2 inch blade is concave ground and flexible. Handle and block of finest russet mahogany by Kittinger. We have yet to see the man who wouldn't love to own one"

The storage block has a sharpening stone built into the bottom of the mahogany storage case.
What era is this from ? 1930's ?
Most vintage Case knives generate a lot of enthusiasm and interest but does this include kitchen cutlery as well ?
This 'set' is unused, pretty much in same condition as when it left Mr. Case's factory about 80 ? plus years ago.
Any thoughts as to approximate market value ?
thanks, kj

This really doesn’t address any of your questions, Roland; but I find it quite interesting that Case used Kittinger Furniture of Buffalo, New York to do the woodwork. I wonder if Kittinger actually manufactured the block and handle or if they simply designed them for Case to manufacture in their own facilities. Kittinger has been in business since 1866. Here’s a link to Kittinger’s website:

Kittinger certainly makes high end furniture. Case obviously wanted an association with Kittinger to raise the 'profile' of their kitchen knives.
It does seem to be a good quality knife and storage 'unit'.

Thanks Dennis. Shows that value is low so therefore of little interest to Case collectors.
This leaves only my question as to age, 1930's ? Or just after WW II ? Anyone know ?

All I can add to the discussion, is that it's a lovely cutter Roland.

I would think with woodwork that good, Case got Kitt. to make those pieces (seeing as that's there specialty, not Cases). But I don't know for sure ::shrug:: , hopefully someone more knowledgeable in vintage Case kitchen cutlery will answer this little mystery, and with the dating.

Good stuff!

Roland,

This post from a chef’s knife forum suggests 1945-50: https://www.chefknivestogoforum.com/vi ... -t463.html. Another poster there says 1970s but based on the graphics on the paper insert I bet that is incorrect. So your post-war guess seems about right to me.

Maybe an email to Case about when they made their Russet series might yield a definitive answer. I assume the name derives from the reddish brown color of the storage block and knife handle.

Dennis

Edit: The more I look at it the more I like the design. I know postage from Canada is crazy but the next time I buy a knife from you if you still have it and still want to sell it let’s talk.

Nice piece - and scarce, but unfortunately not worth much. Definitely late 40's to 50's. I'll look it up in my Case catalogs when I have a chance.

Also, KJ - was that paper folded up in the box with the knife and block? Just curious as I have never seen a Case kitchen knife with the product sheet included.

Looking at Case price lists here is what I found. I do not have price lists for every year.

1952 and previous - not shown.

Listed in the 1955 price list, but in the 1957 price list the entire Russet line was shown as discontinued.

So...at most, 1953-56.

Thanks Steve. Yes this paper came in the box with the knife. Both sides have printed material with the knife giving a pledge of "I Do" 4 times, like "I Do promise to keep my temper and to maintain a sharp outlook", etc. Clever advertising. "I Do hope you'll like me".
The knife is very thinly ground and very sharp. It would be excellent for slicing roast beef paper thin, or ham, etc. Seems a shame to use it as it is almost 70 yrs old and mint, but the value as a collectible is so low that the value is in using it and enjoying it's super sharpness.
