Rust spots on the edge?

My brother passed last weekend. Yesterday, his wife handed me his folding knife collection (several Case, a few Bulldogs). A couple have dark specks on the edges. How can I get rid of these without sharpening the edge, and how can I avoid them in the future?

Try a real fine sand paper, 600 grit then add a thin coat of gun oil on the blade. Do not store dry, if you can store in a wooden box. Throw in a couple of sorbent packs like the ones that come in shoe boxe's

i would rub the edge with 0000 steel wool and oil. keep the blades very lightly coated with gun oil or a wax preservative and store in a dry area. even 600 grit paper will scratch the blade.

They may be carbon spots and it may cause more damage trying to remove them than leaving them alone. This is not uncommon in Bulldog Solingen carbon steel as well as many other carbon steels - but not all carbon steels will have these "pepper spots".

i would love to see some pictures if possible

i would try 0000 steel wool on a small spot and see what happens beforetrying a larger spot..some things are better left alone..

agree with everyone here I use Simichrome polish first if that don't work WD and 0000 steel wool. BullDogs have some hard spots which tend to "spider" on those I would use no more than a light polishing cream.

Which edges? Blade edge; top spine; exactly where are the problems?

If semichrome won't get the active rust out of them you need to let someone else take care of it. I really don't think I would get as aggresive as steel wool unless you think the value has already severely degraded.

Once you get the active rust removed you can apply a protectant.

i agree with the above..
but now 0000 grade steel wool is might fine stuff made for
0000 Finest For buffing and cleaning. Buffs woodwork, shellac ,lacquer and varnish (use with wax or oil.) Cleans windows without water or cleaners. Remove rust from chrome with kerosene.

If they are "pepper spots" or dark spots (black) I would follow with knifeswappers advice. Pictures, if you can provide them would be helpful.
