Very cool Goldfinch photos, Ike!
ZZ - your Vulture photo is not nearly as pretty as the Goldfinches, but even more interesting. I often see Turkey Vultures over my home, and occasionally Black Vultures. None have ever landed here while I was looking. I kind of think it is a bad omen if a Vulture lands on your birdbath!

This European Goldfinch is a handsome bird, would that be the one to which you are referring?Waukonda wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 11:16 pmI will post some pics, Garry, prob not too much unlike your backyard except for the strip mined areas here. The many small lakes and potholes left behind by the mines are good habitat for the Prothonatary Warblers and other species which otherwise, may not have set up shop in Southern Illinois.Quick Steel wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 6:38 pm Based on your bird species I'm guessing you live near some interesting terrain. A few photos of your surroundings would be of interest.I have some Thistle right outside and I saw a couple of these birds (a bit less yellow than yours) hanging out there last sommer.

Yes, if I remember correctly, that's what they looked like. If they return this year, I'll tryin take a picture.

Neat picture!zzyzzogeton wrote: ↑Sun Jun 21, 2020 8:21 pm Here's something you don't see every day --- A Black Vulture chilling out on the bird bath in my back yard. Fuzzy picture taken with my iphone through a dirty window, range about 30 feet.
Official name is Coragypts atratus aka "Black Vulture". The Latin name translated to "raven-vulture clothed in black".
There have been (failed) efforts made since 2007 to change it to "American Black Vulture" as it's range covers from the northern 1/2 of Argentina up to the southern US, stretching from San Diego County to Maryland. Not officially in the Texas panhandle but I wouldn't discount it being found there or up into Oklahoma and Kansas.

Well, both the younguns are flying. Went back on the time line and saw one of the parents fly in with a fish, one of the kids in hot pursuit. Later on saw them both on the nest.

It's best to leave Homer's birds alone if you enjoy slithering

Re: Ornithology (Bird) Thread
Well have to agree with you on this on, my friend. We've had way too many Oak snakes trying to catch birds by coiling up on, around and even inside the bird feeders. Saw one last year actually catch a Chickadee in flight as it came to a feeder! Out away and from the house and yard, most snakes get a pass with the exception of the Cottonmouth Moccasin and the Eastern Diamondback.

Yes cudgee I see this one or I should say I see one quite often. Owls are the most elegant of all the Raptors imo. We also have barn owls and screech owls. As a matter of fact sweet thang and I were sitting on the back deck shortly after dark and heard a screech owl.

Re: Ornithology (Bird) Thread
Very nice owl, Homer! I have not sen an owl this year. They just do not seem to live in my neighborhood. I miss hearing them at dusk. I have never seen a Barn Owl. They are supposed to be in this area. But considering just how rare it is for me to see any owl, I guess I have just not spotted one yet.
