Hi Skip,New_Windsor_NY wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2020 6:29 pm Today my morning trip to the post office produced these knives. First up is a KASTOR & BROS, ADOLPHUS BUSCH, 2 blade, 2 tool pocket knife. No, Mr. Busch isn't present. It needed a bit of a cleaning. Next is an "unbranded" (just stamped ROSTFREI), single blade, 6 tool, "Deer Head" pocket knife. It has both a 12 gauge and a 16 gauge, shotgun shell puller. I just wiped the blades and tools with a cloth. Then comes a single blade "slide" pocket knife. This was included with the "Deer Head" pocket knife and it functions fine. Last is a Girl Scout, single blade, utensil kit pocket knife. This one is a BOKER and is stamped as such. It required no cleaning. I took some pictures and here are the knives.
Stupid question!
I have seen one of those sliding blade knives as a kid.

There are no stupid questions Tom. Yes, it has the viewer (Stanhope). No, the portrait/picture of Mr. Busch that's supposed to be there, isn't there. I might have it repaired.
Here, you can read up on these knives.

Stupid question! That "Busch" has something "round" in the scale. That's not one of those Peephole knives where you can look into it and see a Pin-Up picture inside is it?
Just curious.
I read about those here somewhere a while back.

Scraping the bottom of ye old barrel again.
Had to order some Flex Seal. Lowe's was out of stock, Home Depot was out of stock. Amazon I am boycotting and will cancel my Prime subcription when it runs out in July Menard's doesn't even exist here (nearest store is on OH 3-4 hours away), but had their website bookmarked due to the fact they carry a lot of model train stuff, including old-fashioned style O-gauge track for peanuts. I knew they were primarily a hardware retailer, so that's why I went to them.
I looked at their Guidesman series of knives; and selected this one, the Panther. It is a copy of the Gerber Gator. I like big one-hand opening and locking knives for work, and decided I'd give this one a try. For ten bucks, I decided I wasn't gonna be out a whole load of money if it did stink.
Due to the rubber handle with no liners (or molded over plastic), there's a part of me that says I should've stuck to the traditional offerings, the two-blade Jack called the Settler, the Stockman called the Drover, and the 5" lockback called the Hunter. And then there's the fact the rubber tends to make my hands itch. Always suspected that I have an allergy to latex, and I might be right. But, none of my other knives with rubber inserts/handles have this problem. It's getting torture tested (to the hardest thing I'd reasonably do with a knife) and I'm seeing if it holds up. If so, it's going in a backpack I typically bring with me while camping. Guidesman, to me, might be the next Rough Rider. They have lots of nice looking designs at prices I can afford. I am putting in an order for the Drover and Settler ($10 each), as well a gift set with a nice-looking multitool, flashlight, and knife ($15).
4 3/4" closed, 3 5/8 8Cr13MOV blade. I think that's becoming the new "440 Stainless" in China-made knives. As you tend to see it in even very cheap ones these days. This is the third or fourth store-brand offering I've seen from a big retailer at $10 or under.

Gorgeous knife! I've been looking at a lot of different French knives as of late. They make some nice patterns, but very few can be had in the US. I think Opinel is the only French cutler with a big presence here.doglegg wrote: ↑Wed Jun 17, 2020 6:02 pm My son and daughter in law and grace sent me some money for my birthday and said to spend part of it on a knife. Who am I to argue with that sort of reasoning so I obliged. Not something I would focus on collecting but I did want an example of one so I picked up this one out of the bay. Look at me I am an international buyer as the seller is in France. Pictures tell the story, thanks for looking.DSCN6364.JPGDSCN6365.JPGDSCN6366.JPGDSCN6367.JPGDSCN6368.JPGDSCN6369.JPG

Received this Mcusta today. VG 10 steel, well polished black micarta covers, open frame, pocket clip. The word which immediately came to mind is sleek. Sleek in its appearance and in its operation. The blade came extremely sharp. It shaved arm hair very smoothly, no dragging or scraping needed. Tempted to use it on my facial hair. It has as well what is probably the most acute and sharpest tip I have ever encountered. This is not a knife for industrial work e.g. prying open paint cans. The handle is 4 1/4" long. Blade length is 3 1/4". The first of the following photos has been beautifully enhanced by Jerryd.

Thanks QS, that Mcusta is pretty awesome. Quality to the extreme.
Cody, I'm with you, I would eventually like to get one of those French bumble bee knives. Thanks.

I absolutely lied, the last last bottomfished Barlow hit the mail today... A total novelty buy that I found curious because it is technically a Barlow made by Barlow. And it was dirt cheap, too: I was the only bidder.Meridian_Mike wrote: ↑Wed Jun 17, 2020 11:36 am LOL..... Bottom fishing.....

QS, You know how much I love Mcusta’s. That one is sleek, just like you said. Isn’t that oiled washer system just sooo smooth? When you deploy that blade, it just floats out there. Love it.

Mark you are the man when it comes to Mcustas so that is definite yes on the smoothness provided by the oiled washer system. I particularly appreciate the sharpness right out of the box.
