CaseXX 640054R rescale

I can’t believe it has been over a year since I have posted here. I tend to drift between hobbies. Knives and safety razors. Anyhow, I was able to go out scrounging today. I found this sorry looking CaseXX for $5. As I am partial to Camping knives. I had to save it.

The blade and tools are actually in pretty good shape. I removed all of the remaining scales. Then ran it through my ultrasonic cleaner. I did 3 3 minute cycles. It got most of the grime out. All open and close nice with good snap.

I have done half a dozen rebuilds on knives so far. I am going to attempt to do the scales without taking the knife apart. If it does not work, will just do the full thing. I am doing this just as a learning experience. I will be using Black Delrin as the scale material as I have some at work.

I'm glad to see you used your ultrasonic cleaner....
I ALWAYS forget I have one. I need to incorporate mine into my cleaning procedure.

Looking good so far. I have done a couple of sets of new covers without taking a knife apart. It can be done.

Blanks are cut out. Tomorrow I will remove the shield and mounting rivets for the scales. I plan on making the center pin for the springs and shortening them so maybe the are 1/32 proud. I will use them as a punch to mark the scales. After marking I will drill the center hole in the scales. Then set scales in and use a paper clip bent at 90 deg and heat the tip. Then melt the back side of the scale to mark the other holes. Then drill them out.

I will then cut the pins to mount the scales and peen one end. Insert from the inside and through the scales. Then peen down. I made a stiddy a few months back. It should work great for this part. Then lastly I will take and drive out the center spring pin with the replacement pin. Putting a nice taper on it to help locate better.

Seems like what I did was cut the new covers to fit between the bolsters. Next, I used a drill bit that was sharpened into a "punch" to push the spring back in place with the rocker pin hole. Then, with one of the covers in place, I used the drill bit as a punch to mark the rocker pin hole location. I then drilled that hole and then you can index that cover with a pin thru the rocker pin hole. Then, it's just a matter of drilling thru both liners into the cover. Mark that one for the side it belongs with and repeat for the other cover.
