Philip, the yellow flowers are daffodils. The blueish/light purple are iris. The open field was just mowed today by our neighbor who will soon roll it all up into hay bales.

How are you going to feel about it when it is the size of a basketball? I have seen a few hornet nests that size along the river - I keep my distance from those things!

I'll certainly be keeping an eye on it.
When/if it gets to baseball size, I'll hose it down with bug killer and get rid of it.

When I was working for the school board, one of the schools called and said there was a big hornet's nest in a pine tree on the playground. It was fairly high in the pine and I don't think any of the children had been stung but there was that possibility. We went Kolmetz Hardware and bought a box of 12 ga. high brass #4 "hornet removal shells". The school was closed for some reason and of course maintenance didn't get all those days off so we figured we would take care of the hornet's nest in that time period. It was a big nest, about like a double sized football. We drove out to the tree and the feller that was with me loaded his Remington 1100 with the "hornet removal" shells and brought it down. The shot had torn it up enough that the hornets abandoned the remains fairly quickly. I think the next day we checked it a tossed it in a dumpster.
I was mowing a shooting lane some years ago and ran over a hornet's nest in a low scrub oak with a Massey Ferguson and a 6' bushhog mower. Needles to say I had to find another route out of that particular spot.

Many years ago I was riding a horse one afternoon. Wearing shorts and a t-shirt. As I rode I brushed a cedar tree that had a hornets nest in it.

First we had a rodeo. I was trying to remain seated, and could see the hornets stinging the horse, mostly on the right shoulder. After I got myself and the horse away from there (still in the saddle BTW) and got the hornets off the horse, only then did I feel and see the welts all over my right leg! I was too busy at the time to notice they were stinging me too!
