With a little research I can probably pin it down. The tang stamp on the Schrades simply read stainless. If you mean the Bill Simons that might be harder.

The Higonokami knives made in Japan usually use a laminated steel. I believe that Tony Wood said he uses a simple carbon steel 1084. Maybe Tony will comment on this.

Thanks. Go for it. I used a large wall mirror. Watch for overhead reflections and side lighting. Have fun.

Nice photo and subject, Joe. Mexican silver coins have always impressed me, but I never knew of J.D. Ware or this process until researching after your post. It is amazing, to me, how a coin can be split in half and show no ill effects!

Thanks guys. I always wanted this coin knife by Jeff and finally succeeded last year. This is a true slip Joint with great snap to both blades. In fact, the knife blade has seriously bit me twice. As they say on TV "it will cut.!"
