favorite Celluloids

I picked out a few of my favorite celluloids to show off. A Challenge Jack, a Henry Sears unused jack with blsade etch, a fancy Remington stockman I saved from a Grand Forks Antique shop the day before the flood about 10 years ago that destroyed much of downtown GF. The shop was under water the next day, and a lightly used Remington Stockman Jr. with pretty Root Beer colored handles.____Dave

You gentlemen have so great looking old cell knives. I wonder why it seems like the old cell doesn't give and much problems as the newer cell from the 70's into the 90's? Fight'N Rooster, Winchester and Remington from the era seems to be the worst. But nothing wrong with what you guys have, thanks for posting.

What line (years) of celluloids are most prone to outgassing? That concern is always in the back of my head.

I have well over 100 old celluloid handled knives in my collection and in 25 years, none of them have outgassed. I have had several Western cracked ice of the Boulder era start to gas. They were mint/near mint knives so I cleaned them for a few years (They changed very slowly) and eventually rehandled them in stag or exotic wood. I have a few Repo Remington Cartridge series and a few Winchester repo's and they tend to gas and corrode very slowly so I've had them rescaled also. I've heard Bulldogs and some of the more recent German knives are prone so I avoid them. I keep my old celluloid knives in rolls in a safe, about 60 to a roll, and check them every couple months and they do great and like I said, in 25 years I haven't lost any.____Dave

Thanks Keith. Sort of a caramel waterfall I guess. I don’t recall seeing that celluloid on another knife. It’s probably my favorite of the lot.
