Found Old Pocket Knife - Need Help

Post by jwestuf82 »

Found a Camillus 4-blade pocket knife. Can you help identify when it was manufacture, the handle material, and approximate value. To me the handle material appears to be wood. Thank you

Made after 1946 and it probably originally had black plastic composite handles that deteriorated and someone put those replacement wood handles on it .

I agree with SK's assessment. The handles are replacement and the tang stamp is generally believed to be post World War II, though some believe that stamping was actually used before the end of the war. I have seen some evidence that supports that opinion. I need to do more research to confirm it.

Looks like one of the knives in the $2 bin on a table at a knife show.

Probably wouldn't bring the cost of mailing it somewhere. Doesn't mean you can't throw it in the pocket, as a neat old "user"...but agree with the above remarks. Welcome to AAPK! ::handshake::

Welcome to AAPK!
While that knife has no value to a collector, it is a good Camper style knife, manufactured by an American company that offered high quality cutlery.
Whomever put those wooden handles on it went through the trouble to make them look nice, and I like that. I sometimes enjoy wondering about the story of a knife like that, and imagine a hardworking man who needed a knife, had skilled hands, and could not afford to buy another new one.
I proudly own a few 'custom' knives like that, and wish that they could talk.
I hope you use it and enjoy it!
