Re: Ornithology (Bird) Thread

Post by Waukonda »

Here is a fittinvg story for this thread......Roughly 10 years ago, I stepped out into the garage and found a bird nest in the old shoes that I wore for work around the yard. I chose a different pair and kept an eye out to see what type of bird was building the nest, it was a Carolina Wren. So, for the next couple of weeks, I gave the Wrens temporary ownership of my shoes and we kept the side entry door open so that they would have access. We thought it was a one time thing.....wrong!

Every Spring since then, they and the descendants have returned to nest somewhere in the garage. Sometimes in shoes, some years in the door opener housing. This year, in the top of a cloth bag hanging on a hook in the corner.

Picture is not the greatest because I was zooming in to disturb as little as possible.

Great pics BigH. You certainly have a diversity swinging into Cafe BH.
Something just peaceful and right watching the birds and nature.
While I do get a variety coming to the feeder, it's still limited due to being right up to city dwelling.
We keep praying our next place will be more rural.
Take care and God bless,

My wife and I enjoy watching all the birds, but she seems to have a soft spot for the turkeys. We had the group of 18 this morning. And of course the crows had to check what they were into. A couple of the young Jakes tried to run them of but they were to quick for them.

I live in suburban Birmingham, but there is a large nature preserve adjacent to the neighborhood.

I had two beautiful red-tail hawks in a tree above the house Saturday. I was outside and was alerted by their calls. One had taken a chipmunk from the backyard (Yea!!) and both flew up onto a limb of a pine tree. The one with the meal, however, wasn't in a sharing mood, so the other left for another tree.

Couldn't get a decent photo with cell phone.

Majestic creatures, especially in flight.

Seems both little eaglets are growin' up fast. Not much squabble over the food; taking their turns as momma offered it.
This is fun to follow!

Got a picture of this guy munching on a pidgeon in the backyard. Not sure what kind of hawk it is but it was pretty cool! Hes been to our yard previously because we find piles of feathers back there from time to time.
