That is cool the way Gerber had the smarts to date their earlier stuff, wonder why they quit?

Take a look at these two Miming knives I have. The two major differences are the bottom one has never been plated and the stamps as shown. There is also a couple of minor differences, but I will not go there, you may spot them.
The top one with the Miming stamp & sword is going to be my future trout knife. Reckon it would be okay if I drill a hole through it for a landyard? I am not sure how they put the handles on.

Ken
I known where a pocket knife stamped 1948 is, but it is in a private collection. Look for military issue utility pocket knives, the steel one's. Some of those where year stamped on the bail in the late 40's. The one I am refering too, was made by Ulster IIRC.
Good luck with your quest.

Throught this would be a good time to sneak my view in.
I am standing on a 300 foot rock ledge the "Sky Hippies" take off from. Our home is directly at the bottom of pic to the center right just a tad, see the little white dots past the tree line? The big building to the far right is a school.
In the distance you see the Holston River (It becomes the Tennessee just north of K-Town), then Cherokee Lake and in the far distance The Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

BamaFatman is located to the far Right of the Smokies at the base :)

miming

Post by Mossdancer »

Hi Rick:
Been a bit, The plated blade and handle miming could be from the late fifties. I just have not had time to look into the newer ones. I suppose the one with gerber and unplated handle has a plated blade cause they started plating them in 1950. It could possibly be a transition in the later part of 51 when D.Murphy won a suit against Gerber about use of the truncated handle pattern and they had to stop using the look. To bad, it was a great handle. Were you to advertise it as such being a possibility you might get several bucks from it.
I am in the process of putting together some little fishing knives made from the older blades with a nice high ride sheath I have had made up.
You being such a stalwart citizen and Sandbar Stag afficionado probably could work up a trade of some sort for one. Your probably to young to get a birth year as I can only ID 45 thru 51. Drop me a PM or email if interested.
Really neat looking country you reside in. I spent a year in Western Tenn back a while ago, great time to be there. Took side trips down to Sardis Miss. several times, funny the main drag was dry. Saw my only fireflies
back then. Met one or two Southern Belles also. They sure talked funny.
Enough of my reminiscing, hope you folks had a great turkey day.
Later,wb

Here's a set I've had for awhile.Small blade is marked,"Pixie" but the larger knife is unmarked. Both have armorhide handles.Sheath is marked simply,"GERBER" on the reverse and someone has crudely carved his initials(H.V.)into the front.

Hi K7K:
Your set appears to be a Pixie/Shorty piggyback. The double sheaths were started in the late 50's. This armorhide pair was produced from 1969-1976. The blade should be around 5 inchs, overall about 8 3/4 inch.
Have no idea what to attribute it to but there are quite a few unmarked and partially marked Gerbers. Must have been a leftover sheath as the zip code sheaths should have been available by then. I have a 1951 Shorty in the same old sheath you have that is attached to the Pixie.
Nice knives thanks for the pic.

OAL is right at 8 1/2" and appears to be original. One unusual thing I noticed is that the cutting edge appears to be either corroded or there were flaws in the original steel. Both blades exhibit this;the Pixie more so.

I'm wondering if it the result of storing the knives in the sheath for a prolonged period of time or rather they were put into the sheath with blood still on them.I have seen this happen with carbon steel blades but not stainless.

I don't store them(or any other knives)in their sheaths but I have no clue as to how they were stored before I acquired them.

On the Pixie,it almost looks as though there is a layer of chrome plating near the point but nowhere else.

Always there is the possibility that I am totally wrong. I do however think both of these blades were chrome plated. Gerber started chrome plating their blades in 1950 and I can find no mention of going to stainless til later on, if this is the case then sharpening and leaving in or out of sheath would generate a problem. I have never understood the need for plating when a high polish produces a nicer effect and with age patination and no chipped chrome. Again, just my opinion.

Kitchen knives

Post by CCBill »

I have a few kitchen knives that I would sell. I would prefer Paypal.
From top to bottom:
Primble hickory
L.L.Bean
L.L.Bean (who made these? Kabar?)
Cattaraugus
Shapleigh's Hammer Forged 1843 Old Hickory (who made it?, when?)
Forgecraft High Carbon (Who made it?)

All in good shape. All are VERY sharp. Would make a good addition to your collection. I'll take $30.00 and pay shipping for all.

some interesting nuances

Post by Mossdancer »

Hi:
To go on from previous post about the gerber.
These two are Murphy/Gerber Joyeuse knives. They were both taken from an EBJ set that was previous to 1945. I have given four photos with a cropped section of each. There will also be some Documentation for top knife in each photo, This is my latest to acquire. The top knife seem to show some refinement in the casting mold and in the stamp. Any ideas would be appreciated. Keep in mind these knives I believe would have to have been one of the original 25 sets made for Gerber in 1938 or one from 1939,1940 or one of the 300 sets Murphy made in 1941 before he geared up to make military only. As far as I can find he never made another knife for Gerber. This latest also has a silicon carbide stone located in front left hand corner of presentation box. I will include a photo of that and its' document. Any ideas as to how to preserve or archive the sharpener document would be appreciated. On one of docs it says this set was especially made for VLA.

A Gerber Grail

Post by Mossdancer »

Hi;
For the worth of it, I recently acquired what I believe is one of the first year of production of the Gerber Shorty. That would be one of the first 895 shorties that were made. That is excepting the two prototypes that were made early in the year, I can only imagine it could be the first or the last of the first year. The sheath is original as far as I can research, It is before they started with the small gerber inside an ovate circle.

Gerber

Post by Mossdancer »

Hello All;
Just maybe this will bring a bit of closure to this subject. Although there may be one more post in a week or so. God willing and the auction goes my way.
The below is a first for me. They appear to never to have been sharpened. It is an EBJ set(that is Excalibur, Balmung and Joyeuse) that was delivered to Abercrombie and Fitch Co. The Handles are marked on the left Gerber and on the right Abercrombie and Fitch Co.There is also a reciept acknowledging delivery of knives to A & F Co.
Supposedly Murphy signed them also, However I have seen about twenty Murphy made EBJ sets and none had his name, his style is plain for those who know it. These do not have the exposed tang so I think they may be part of the last group of knives that Gerber talked Murphy out of after Pearl Harbor Attack. I am certainly subject to being corrected though.

Hey Niner:
Bringing this forward for two reasons one is you mentioned it a while ago and two I got a Gerber I wanted to show off.
This is an Fh-1 Gerbers first try at a folding hunter. Pretty good job. Designed by Francis Ham Gerber about 1968. Damn, It would be nice to have the old wolf man around to jabber with. Take a look and Oh what was it you needed to know?

Good morning WB & Others :D ,

That be a rare knife, I have been looking for one a couple of years now. Seems they know what they are on talltalebay and like to run up the bid. I got a photo/images of original box I stole someplace if you would like to see it.

Take a look at this Murphy set I found, all stamped MURPHY. They got the fork on Cutters Cove, but they are not sure if it is pre or post Gerber. I got to say the the box is sure made better than any Gerber set I have or seen. And those big fat handles really feel good in my hand.

You got any comments or history on it? I have only seen their/his fighting knives and what you have shown us here.......and that other fork.

I sure do miss the Wolf Man and Roger also. I can understand how his son feels. I heard on the news yesterday somebody found Bigfoot in north Georgia USA this week, they got Him on ice. The Big Foot Society out on the Left Coast is going to have a press conference this Sunday.

BTW.......Japan never surrendered, Hito(?) told his folks to quit fightin' or we would burn them up. I found the name of the Gerber knock off Miming knives also, as soon as I figure out how to spell it, I will let you know. They pop up every so offen.......maybe Al Mar had something to do with it after Gerber, but that just guessing out loud.

Later,
Niner

ok, lets hear it.
the japanese never painted their aircraft white, with green meatballs...flew to designated spot on predetermined flight path...no signing ceremony on the deck of the missouri?

All:
I suppose it's time I made another post. As stated before I am not a Historian although I have spent a few hours reading about WWII. IMO The Imperial forces acquiesced to the Commanded statement by what had been come to be known as the Allied Forces. So did they ever come out and on their own say we Surrender, if so I never heard the words spoken. They did accept their surrender position as a face saving move for them by accepting the aforementioned command statement of the Allied Forces. And that folks is a whole bunch of Weasel words, probably the closest to Political Correctness that I have ever used intentionally. Being as how this is not a political forum I shall cease and desist.

Here you go.......The handle lenght are the same with all and the stamp is in the same location.
I am thinking this set may be post Gerber because of the pointed end; The early Miming I have is flat on the end looking from these angles.
Thanks for your time

BTW: Those look alike's are call "Samurai". I saw a set being offered with a Gerber carving set last week IIRC.
